Harmony Day

Harmony Week celebrates and recognises the diversity of Australians, bringing our many backgrounds together to highlight inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging.

At Lyndhurst SC, situated on the land of the Bunurong people, our students basked in the colourful celebrations with pride, dressing in their cultural clothing and flags.

Our celebrations began with a Traditional Smoking Ceremony, performed by an Elder from the Bunurong Land Council. Our Year 7s along with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students actively participated and engaged with the ceremony as the smoke cleansed the courtyard in the Welcome to Country.

The celebrations continued with a whole school assembly where students proudly showcased their many cultural backgrounds through performances and presentations. It was wonderful to see the whole school engaged and to hear the loud cheers from the audience as our Pasifika students performed the Sah Sah, our Year 10 Afghan girls performed a traditional Afghan dance, and teachers Ms.Khanna, Ms. Vodehra and Ms. Ambikavathi performed an Indian Ghoomer dance. We were honoured to have hosted distinguished guests, Dr. Sushil Kumar, Consul General of India; Mr. Shashi Kochhar, President of the Friends of the Children Foundation;  Masooda, School Support Officer from Foundation House; as well as many of our students’ families.

At lunch, students enjoyed a taste of different cultures, eating boloni, okonomiyaki, jiaozi, hallongrotta, samosas, hot cross buns, bubble tea and otai, which were prepared by Food Technology students during the week. Students also crowded around the courtyard, enjoying more cultural performance which were organised by drama and music teachers, Ms. Thay and Ms. Yeoman. Key highlights include a Cambodian dance by Year 12 Cambodian students, singing from our Year 10-12 Samoan students, the Haka, the school’s newly formed band, rangoli making and an Afghan dance.

The celebrations ended with a splash of colour, celebrating Holi, the Indian Festival of Colours. Students participated in a colour run as they ran through different stations, with Holi powder coating their clothes. Students finished the day with happy smiles and a greater understanding and appreciation of the many cultures at Lyndhurst. What a wonderful experience that we look forward to again next year.
