Upcoming Event... Auslan Day - Thursday 13th April 2023

In the holidays, on Thursday 13th April, the Australian Deaf Community will be celebrating Auslan Day! This special day is in recognition of the first publication of the Auslan Dictionary by Professor Trevor Johnston who is a child of a deaf adult, on 13th of April 1989.

Auslan Day celebrates the rich history, culture, community and language of the Australian Deaf community by honouring the date of first publication of this Auslan Dictionary.' (https://deafaustralia.org.au/)

Auslan Day is a celebration for everyone! You can celebrate by:

*  Learning some new Auslan signs.

*  Watching some Deaf people's online videos.

Click the following link to watch an interesting short video (11mins) titled 'Auslan no AUSLAN' featuring Trevor Johnston

https://deafaustralia.org.au/auslan-day-2021-auslan-no-auslan-trevor-johnstons-view/

*  Watching Auslan storybooks online.

*  Printing the attached Auslan Day Colouring page for some mindfulness colouring time.

In Auslan Class:

All students have been learning Auslan signs for some Feelings.

* Grade Preps have been representing different emotions in pictures and practicing signing these emotions to the class. They have also read the story of 'Milo Armadillo' by Jan Fearnley and signed the different feelings that characters have experienced at different times throughout the story.

* Grade 1-2s have been completing small group performances in class to apply their knowledge of Auslan colours learned earlier this term. They have also been representing various emotions/feelings in pictures to sign to the class.

* Grades 3-6 have been creating Feelings Powerpoint Presentations to share with the class to practise the signs for various feelings we have been learning to sign, including:

Feeling, Happy, Sad, Excited, Nervous, Shy, Love, Silly, Safe, Angry, Surprised, Scared, Bored, Calm, Sick, Proud, Tired and Brave.

New feelings signs we have been learning this week, include:

Emotion, Curious, Upset, Patient, Kind, Thirsty, Hungry, Strong, Sorry, Confused (a confusing sign in itself!!), Lucky, Unlucky, Naughty, Forgetful, Okay, Worried, Sleepy, Hopeful, and Smiley (like an emoji!)

These signs are very new, so students may only remember a few of these at this point. We will be revising them after the holidays, so don't panic if they are not yet committed to memory!

We have also been revising conversational sentences like: How are you? I'm good, I'm bad, I'm okay, I feel... a little, or VERY... (nervous, tired, excited etc.), and signing 2 feelings together in sentences (eg: I feel happy and excited, I feel sad and sick, I feel shy and nervous.)

Enjoy practising your Auslan over the holidays! Looking forward to Term 2 of Auslan with you all!!

Mrs Riordan.

School Cross Country

Congratulations to all students who completed our Cross Country on Monday. The weather was perfect for running and it was great to see students participating to the best of their ability. It was also wonderful to see so many spectators cheering on the children as they crossed the finish line. Every student who completed the course received House points and a ribbon. Bonus points were awarded to students who finished in the top 10 of their event. Congratulations to the students of SAVAGE House for winning this year’s House Cross Country challenge.

I would like to thank the SGPS staff for making it such a smooth running and successful day. I would also like to thank Billsy Maher, Kate Hardinge, Wendy and Mr Trezise who stayed behind to pack up at the end of the day. Your help was greatly appreciated.

National Ride2School Day

It was great to see some many students riding, scooting or walking to school on National Ride2School Day (Friday 25th March).

National Ride2School Day is Australia’s biggest celebration of active travel. It is a day where students, teachers and parents discover the joy of riding and kick-start healthy habits for the future.

Just under 80% of all students actively travelled to school at least part of the way. Well done in particular to Grade 5/6 McClellan who had an amazing 93% active travellers.
