Principal's Report

Security Cameras

As mentioned in the newsletter last week, security cameras will be installed at our school. We expect this to occur over the holiday period. We have been working with DET for about 12 months to ensure we are complaint with their rules and regulations. The cameras are only being installed in external areas, with the aim of deterring damage being caused outside of regular school hours, such as the graffiti damage that occurred overnight.

Ride to School Day

It was fantastic to see so many students (and their parents) riding, scooting and walking to school last Friday on Ride to School day. The paths were flat-out, and what a fantastic sight to see the lower oval taken over by so many scooters and bikes.

With 112 bikes and 62 scooters on the oval, combined with walkers, over half the school chose active travel to school, and for those who had to drive, it would have been a welcome sight to have so many car spaces available.

Everyone benefits when more of the Spring Gully school students are active on their way to school.

Riding, scooting or walking to school is a great way to start the school day for all students (and parents), and if you can’t go all the way from home, parking at Stanley St soccer oval, or near the Spring Gully Oval, it’s still a great way to kickstart the day, even if its only one day per week.

Congratulations to everyone at Spring Gully PS that supported active transport, just need to make it a regular habit not just once a year.

A reminder, every Wednesday there is a group of students riding and scooting from Stanley St (along the shared path) to school – meeting at 8.20am (cnr Stanley and Retreat Rd). Everyone is welcome to join us.

New Shade Sail

The final shade sail was completed last week. We now have lots of great places to get protection from the sun, while we relax or play.

Solar System

The 40kw solar system was also completed last week. We are now just waiting on the protective cage for the inverter. Once this is installed next week, the system will be activated by the contractor.

Harmony Day

We all had a fabulous time celebrating Harmony Day on March 24. We started with a whole-school assembly, featuring wonderful student speeches, a song performed in Auslan, a Choir performance and a didgeridoo demonstration, while we finished the day with The Central Victorian Lion Team performing a Chinese Lion dance. In between these performances the children engaged in various activities that helped develop their understanding of the various cultures and traditions from around the world.

Special thanks to our Music teacher, Effie Hamilton, for coordinating such a great day. Thanks also to our staff and parents for their important contributions.

Easter Hat Parade

Another great SGPS tradition took place today, with our annual Easter Hat Parade. What a great way to finish an awesome term!

Thanks to all of our wonderful families for their generous Easter raffle donations. Our Parent Club were able to have 44 prizes, with many of our students going home with one. Thanks also to those families that were able to sell their raffle tickets. Parent Club now have an extra $3100 to put towards a project of their choice.

SunSmart Policy Term 2

A reminder that we have implemented the Cancer Council SunSmart recommendation – hats are to be worn until the end of April. It is therefore mandatory that students wear an ‘approved’ SunSmart hat outside for play and sporting activities from the commencement of next term until the end of April.

Term 2

Term 2 commences on Wednesday, 26th April. Monday, 24th April is a curriculum day followed by ANZAC Day on Tuesday, 25th April.

I would like to wish all of our families a very safe and happy holiday.  I would like to thank you all on behalf of the staff for your continued support of our school.
