Grade 5/6 News

Term 1, Week 8

Art Gallery Excursion

On Friday the Grade 5/6s visited the Bendigo Art Gallery to see the Australiana exhibition. This was the culmination of our unit exploring personal identity. Students looked at many pieces from the last 200 of Australian art that contribute to the idea of the Australian identify.

Transition - Year 7 2024

Dear Families of Grade 6 Students.

Transition commences in Term 2 2023 for our Grade 6 students moving from primary to secondary school. Early next term, we will send home all documentation for transition placement.

Information for parents can be found by following this link https://www.vic.gov.au/moving-primary-secondary-school-information-parents-and-carers. This could be a good starting point for the families that are going through this process for the first time and also for parents who have been through it before, but some time ago.

Some schools, in particular non-government schools, have already begun advertising their Information Evenings and Open Days. Each school’s website is the best place to go to find out information about these experiences and when they are occurring.

Please remember to check Compass alerts and keep up to date with our school’s newsletter as information will be sent out throughout the year. It’s important to complete the different parts of the process within the set time frames and helps to make my role easier, so I am not having to chase up late items.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me either by email or through the school office.

Regards,

Chris McClellan

Term 2

Topic

In second term students will be looking at Australian history with particular reference to the events that helped to shape Australia as a country. Over the term we will explore various events in our countries history and look at how they helped make us the country we are today.

Writing

At the beginning of second term we will be focussing on our persuasive writing skills. Students will look in a more in-depth way at their language choices and how the words they use help to make their writing more effective.

Maths

In second term we will be beginning a strong number focus in maths to help strengthen our core number skills. Students will work in ability groups at least once a week to develop the specific skills that are most needed for them.

We will also continue to build on our applied skills each week in our classes, beginning with Data and Statistics in the first weeks of the term.

Melbourne Excursion

In week 5 next term we are planning a day trip for all Grade 5/6 students to Melbourne. Students will get to explore the Old Melbourne Gaol, complimenting our Australian History unit. We will also visit the MCG and the Australian Sports Museum which all students usually enjoy when we have visited as part of our past Grade 6 Urban camps.

We are still working out transport details. It is our hope to keep costs down for this excursion by utilising public transport. We also see this as a large part of the 'Melbourne experience' we are trying to create for our students. Hopefully we will be able to keep the cost down near the $30 mark for each student.
