Year 6 Camp Reflection: The Giant Swing

"The giant swing stood before me, a hint of unfamiliar fear floating in my brain. The giant swing reached up into the blue sky, while clouds drifted slowly past. Students lined up against a long orange rope. That rope … that rope decided how high someone would go, when someone would swing, that rope was in control.
Someone went first, bravery and courage etched on their face. He sat, suspended in the air, as we heaved the rope, he rose, higher and higher into the sky. As he reached the pinnacle, we released the rope in unison, he dropped. A cheerful scream muffled by the wind. He swung, back and forth, back and forth. Time seemed to stand still.
MY TURN. Beads of sweat appeared on my forehead, a black storm rumbling in my stomach. A moment ago, I was on the ground, blades of soft green grass under my shaking feet and a cool breeze blowing through my hair. Now I was up in the sky, metres above the ground. My hands glued to the rope, the rope that would in a moment make me fall.  “3….2…1!” Students chanted in unison, as my breath stopped for a second. Wind blasted my face, as a shriek escaped my lips. I swung … a huge pendulum, a grin across my face, laughter escaped from my mouth …”Second time!” the teacher shouted ..."   Ruby L
