Appropriate use of ICT at Sacred Heart Kew

It’s a timely reminder that we all need to make sure that we are making appropriate use of all ICT/online communication platforms. This includes email correspondence.

This term, we have noticed a number of issues. These include:

  • Inappropriate use of language by children on various online chat platforms (when at home, outside of school hours), including, misuse of these platforms - with children who are sick at home, messaging other children at school during the day.
  • Parents messaging children through these online chat platforms and also by email, during the school day.

These issues can all be resolved relatively easily by families, in the following ways:

  • Parents are encouraged to regularly monitor, inspect and remove online chat platforms/apps that their children have been using.
  • Parents can contact the school admin email address if they wish to communicate with their child(ren) throughout the school day admin@shkew.catholic.edu.au

Helpful tips and information for Parents

We do recommend that these messaging apps be deleted as our experience over many years is that children need time to develop the skills to fully understand the nuances involved in communicating appropriately, via online messaging. However, it is your family’s choice whether you decide to keep these apps. If these apps are kept they need to be turned off during school hours.

For further information and reminders regarding appropriate use of ICT/communication, please refer to both our ‘ICT Responsible Use Agreement’ and ‘Sacred Heart School iPad Guidelines and Responsible Use Agreement’, which both children and parents signed on Operoo at the beginning of the school year.

e-Safety Guide

Parents can also refer to the following website to find out more about some of the common apps children are using and whether they are age appropriate.

Thank you for your consideration and support with this matter as we keep all children and school community members safe at all times, both in the online world and the real world environment.

As in previous years and as part of the Digital Technologies curriculum, the Year 4 students will be completing online modules provided by eSmart Digital Licence+ (Alannah & Madeline Foundation). This online learning experience builds digital intelligence in students, giving them the knowledge and skills they need to harness the opportunities and deal with the challenges of the digital world.

Students will explore the following:

  • understanding the importance of balancing their technology use with other things in their life and knowing how to achieve balance through cognitive self-regulation and the application of strategies
  • understanding the many types of cyber risks (e.g. cyberbullying) and how kindness can be practised
  • identifying the strategies to deal with cyber risks as they encounter them, and knowing how to behave like an upstander to help others
  • understanding the attributes or ‘red flags’ of a cyber threat (particularly phishing scams), and knowing the strategies to identify, deal with, report and remain vigilant to cyber threats
  • understanding what empathy is and why it is important
  • recognising the challenges of online disinhibition and the strategies to demonstrate empathy online

Year 6 Student Wellbeing Leaders News

This year we are going to be holding Wellbeing Group afternoons on two Fridays each term. These Wellbeing Groups will replace Assembly on those days. Wellbeing Groups is where all year levels, Prep to Six, do wellbeing activities together in multi-age groups. The aim of these activities is to socialise and get to know other students not in the same year level. During the lessons we will be learning about different wellbeing qualities. Our first lesson, which was held this afternoon, was about gratitude and remembering to say thank you to others. In our Wellbeing Groups, we will be learning about why it is important to socialise with new people and how to work in a group of different ages. We will share our ideas and stories together to build friendships all throughout the school. We hope this will help people feel comfortable sharing their personal stories and allow older students to give advice to the younger children.
