Middle Years

Perseverance – just get on with it!

Since the last newsletter, the Middle Years students have been very busy. Last week we held the Year 9 Micah Experience information evening, which was recorded for those who missed the online event, and a boarder’s parent information evening. House Sports, with a new format where students can participate in any of the events they choose, and the Year 7s and 9s completed their NAPLAN. These events have illustrated to me the value of the strength of perseverance for students in their academic and co-curricular pursuits.

Perseverance is about sticking with things, working hard, and finishing what is started, despite any obstacles that may arise. Demonstrating perseverance and completing a task or project can be a very pleasurable experience. When times are tough or challenging, people high in the character strength of perseverance know this pleasure will eventuate, so use this to get through these challenges. Previous success with persevering helps build further confidence for future successes and goal accomplishment. Perseverance has two aspects; it requires both effort for a task and duration to keep the task up until completed.

During the House Athletics, many of the Middle Years students showed their perseverance in the longer distance races along with giving their best in each field event. The Year 7 and 9s completed their NAPLAN tests over 4 days and showed perseverance to complete all questions to the best of their ability over online tests up to 65 minutes. Hopefully these experiences will help the students develop their perseverance ready for future challenges.

In the Middle Years office, the myPEC staff have been discussing some research that shows that the wellbeing factor most associated with learning is perseverance. So, if you want to learn efficiently, just get on with it!
