Deputy Principal, Teaching and Learning

It has been an exceptionally busy term one, with students making the transition into a new learning program and negotiating the high academic expectations for either Middle Years or Senior Years. Congratulations to our year 3, 5 7 and 9 students who have successfully completed NAPLAN, and the wonderful team of staff who have supported this event.

Our students have enjoyed excursions to Art, Drama and Music events, overnight Outdoor Education camps, Geography Field trips, incursions with Gareth Colliton from One Day Studios, author Steven Herrick and a range of masterclass events for our VCE students. Students involved in our extension programs, The Edge and Excel have started to forge friendships and develop academic interests that will challenge their thinking and learning.

Student Learning Progress

As we approach the end of the term teachers are finalising assessments and writing learning advice for the Term One Report. At the same time a group of staff who are involved in our Pilot Program for Continuous Reporting have been providing ongoing updates on student’s achievement and suggesting next steps feedback for improvement. As a result, the Term One Reports will look a little different this time.

Thank you for your support of the pilot program. We are learning more about our students progress and the importance of our students and parents having access to timely, targeted feedback. Our partnership between parents, students and teachers is vital and we are grateful for the interest families at the College show in learning.

Students and parents will be able to read about each subject, the course description, a list of tasks and assessments and a combination of grades, next steps feedback and in some cases learning advice. All subject teachers will provide learning behaviour indicators for each student, and this is additional feedback of how students are managing their own learning in the classroom. In addition, the College report will acknowledge any student who is studying with an external provider (VET, VSV or VSL). Formal reports can be obtained directly from the provider.

Reading the Term One Report

I would encourage families to use the release of the report as an opportunity to talk about learning together and emphasise the importance of attendance, organisation and seeking support when required. Our Academic Assistance program which runs Monday – Thursday in the Winifred Berry Library from 3.45 – 5.30pm provides students with additional support from specialist teachers and a space to study. If you would like to discuss your child’s progress further then we invite you to attend our online Student Parent Teacher Interviews on Wednesday 29th March 2023. If your child’s teacher is not available during the designated time an additional SPT Interview has been scheduled for week 1 of term 2. Bookings can be made via the online PAM parent portal. For more information about PAM, please contact Mrs Susie Holcombe.
