Meatless Mondays

In our efforts as a community to become more sustainable, please join the Year 12 Environmental Science class and I in the “Meatless Mondays” challenge. Eating less meat reduces demand, greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and our carbon footprint, all from changing one simple meal choice.

Top 3 Reasons to 'go meatless' once a week:

For the Environment

* Reduce your carbon footprint

* Minimise water usage

* Fight deforestation

* Reduce land degradation

* Protect wildlife and plant biodiversity

* Reduce greenhouse gases

Your Health

* Reduce heart disease and stroke

* Limit cancer risk

* Fight diabetes

* Curb obesity

* Improve the nutritional quality of your diet

* Live longer

For Your Wallet

* Curb healthcare spending

* Cut weekly budget

Student Ecological Leaders

"On the Monday 27 March, Jacob and I introduced ourselves to the Year 7's during their assembly in the morning for Homeroom.

Jacob started off by talking to the students about their ‘nude food’ to limit the plastic wrappers being brought to school. They were encouraged to continue to keep up these efforts.

I then continued to talk about the pollution of these wrappers across the Junior Yard and the majority of students spotted these wrappers with many of them going out of their way to pick them up and put them into the bin which is fantastic to see.

I also wanted to make the point to them our they are the students that are the future of St Bede’s and how we want to work with the students that are passionate just how myself, Jacob, Ms Zigouras and Mr Hunter are. We want to make St Bede’s a more sustainable environment for all current students and for the students of the future at St Bede’s."

Mission Action Day

This year our Mission Action Day walk was complemented by a concerted effort to be environmentally conscious. Our walking groups - which headed east and west from the school - were replete with ‘claws’ and bins to leave the paths looking better than we found them. Many bags were filled with existing rubbish that had been dumped or washed up on the beach, and I’m pleased to report that our students did not make much of a contribution to the litter.

We are also considering changes for upcoming MAD days in relation to litter and waste, both on the walk and on-site at school. These dialogues are important, as we seek to minimise our impact on the environment around us and be good stewards of this Earth – our common home.

Thanks to all the teachers who helped with the clean-up. The following students volunteered to clean up on MAD day, and received canteen vouchers for their efforts: Sam Harris, Jacob Brown, Xavier Brown, Cooper Manuel and James Thomas.
