Donate Your Second-hand Cricket Gear

Tom Gregory - Year 11

If you have any cricket gear or clothing which you no longer use, or have grown out of, why not donate it less fortunate cricketers?

I’m collecting used cricket gear and clothing for disadvantaged Victorians who are keen on playing cricket.  Any donations of bats, balls, pads, gloves, helmets, bags, stumps and clothing (with or without club logos) of all sizes, will be appreciated. The gear will be cleaned before delivery to Cricket Victoria for distribution to clubs.

Previous years’ collections have been distributed to Edinburgh Gardens All Abilities Team, Croxton Special School and St Kilda City Mission. Covid brought a stop to the collection for a couple of years, but it’s starting back up again.

Please do not donate used protectors due to hygiene issues.

All gear can be left in Mr John McAlroy’s office, and will be collected from there.

Any queries, please email Tom Gregory at gregt19@stbedes.catholic.edu.au

Thank you for your support.

Letter of Thanks

We were humbled to receive the below letter of thanks from a member of the community whose lost their home and possessions in the 2019 bushfires.  In the interest of privacy, we have kept the author and identity of the students involved confidential, however felt that it was important to acknowledge the positive impact these three students have had on this family during such a devastating time.

"Dear St Bede's College,

I am the President of the Sarsfield Community Association (our bush fire recovery committee) and I recently received an email from the Conference Secretary St. Vincents de Paul, Bairnsdale.

The email had a group of photos showing items of furniture that had been made by the St James College (now St Bede's College) students following the disastrous bushfires we suffered at the end of 2019.  The email explained that Covid and other things had slowed the whole process down, but they were happy to be able to be distributing the furniture now.  I sent this to members of the Sarsfield community and the deal was ‘first in best dressed’.

Two days later I applied for item number 13 – a lovely bedside table/drawers and was successful in obtaining it.  Once I unwrapped the plastic protection cover and opened the top drawer there was a small timber plaque explaining who made it and the material used.  I have attached a photo of the table in place alongside my bed and also one of the plaque.

Our home and contents (of 45 years) were totally burnt in the fire and thankfully we were well insured.  Insurance helps a lot, but some things you cannot afford even then.  We have not rebuilt, rather sold the land and are still renting in Eastwood, a suburb of Bairnsdale.  My wife has recently gone into age care, so I altered the rooms around at home and I bet the students who made the item would never have guessed what I was going to buy in the next week or so?  Yes! a set of drawers for my bedside and when I saw their item on the list, I put in my bid and was able to acquire the table.

Could you please pass my sincere thanks on to [these three] students for their outstanding workmanship, as the piece of furniture is a very useful item and it functions very well indeed.  One very good thing is that the bedside table is nice and large and I have never had a smoother set of drawers to open and close as they run so well.

I wish the 3 students well with their studies and ask them, and the other students who made the other items, to please keep that great spirit of helping others alive - as they go through their life.  Also, no doubt, there were some dedicated teaching staff involved with this massive project and I thank them for their contribution too."
