Sights of Healesville

Year 9 local area excusion

Recently, Year 9 students attended an excursion in our local area. Other than having fun and learning in the outdoors, the key purpose was to encourage students to gain inspiration for their upcoming English CAT. This CAT requires students to write a creative piece that connects to our local area in some way.

To begin with, students visited Toolangi and heard a story about a ghost who apparently frequents the Toolangi Cricket Oval.

Following the exploration of this area, they were fortunate enough to view the water tanks at the C.J. Dennis Hall, which were co-painted by past student, Ruby Parr.

We headed back down the Myers and visited Coranderrk to consider how this magical setting could inspire some creative writing.

Morning tea was enjoyed at the Healesville Railway Station and students considered how this station contributed to the creation of Healesville as a tourist town, along with exploring the old carriages.

Next up, students retraced the steps of Suzanne Lawrence, a past Healesville High School student who tragically  went missing in 1987, after attending a party at the Memorial Hall. Suzanne’s disappearance is a local mystery that remains unsolved.

The excursion finished at Maroondah Dam with a barbeque cooked by Andy- thanks Andy! Given the intense heat of the day, students enjoyed lounging around in the shady spots before heading back to school.

As is often the case, students were a joy to spend time with and we can’t wait to see the creative pieces they write in the upcoming weeks.
