Professional Learning Community 1 (Grade 1)

Students in Grade 1 have been busy working hard as we progress past the halfway mark of the term. Each class is very eager for our upcoming fete this Thursday night and have been preparing our Frozen Green Thumb stall by creating some advertising posters.

Over the past few weeks, we have been working on a very special piece of writing to add to this year’s showcase portfolios which each of our students have been adding their own creative flair. Numeracy has had a brief focus on chance and probability, analysing the outcomes of dice roles, making predictions and exploring the language associated with the possibilities of events.

With our upcoming emergency services day next Monday, this will surely be a terrific opportunity to meet, greet and ask questions to our community members that support, aid and provide order to our local neighbourhood and surrounds. You won’t want to miss it.

Just a friendly reminder to keep up our reading efforts and ensure you get your diary signed each night.

Professional Learning Community 2 (Grade 2)

Fete Week! Wow, what a start to Term 1 it has been.

Thank you to all have families who generously donated to our DPS Fete Bake Sale.

PLC2 would like to welcome all students, families, friends, and special guests to our Delacombe school Fete. Please visit the PLC 2 Bake Sale and treat yourself to a few yummy goodies. We are also running the DPS Uniform Stall, please come and see the range of second-hand school uniform garments.

Students have been working hard at writing a persuasive text “The school fete enriches our school”. Students have argued as to how certain stalls will assist them to be happy and wise. We have used our CUPS to help edit our writing and improve our original ideas.

In Reading, students have been focusing on making connections and using the reading process to help them solve words and ensure that they are able to understand what they are reading. It has been great to see so many diaries coming to school each day with a parent/guardian signature. Keep up the brilliant home reading PLC2.

In Numeracy, students have been renaming numbers and arranging collections so that they can be automatically recalled. Students have used bundling sticks and MAB to make, rearrange and rename different number. Well done to all students on building their own bead string and learning how to place numbers on chalk number lines.

Professional Learning Community 3 (Grade 3)

Wow…our FETE is soooo close! We are buzzing with excitement about our Disco room where we can dance till we drop. So if you feel like tapping those feet and clicking your fingers, don’t forget to enter the Grade 2/3 corridor near the portables to have a bit of fun!

This week, our PLC3 students will be analysing non-fiction texts by discussing how the author engages the reader. We will look at different features such as how captions describe photos, how labelled diagrams show where different parts of a drawing are and how tables can summarise important information. We will also look at the layout of these texts by identifying the contents page, headings, sub-headings, an index and glossary. As Naplan is fast approaching, we will continue to practise some Naplan type questions using the Chromebooks. This allows students some time to explore practise websites.

Our Numeracy this week has been about extending our knowledge of place value. Understanding how every digit in a number has a value, underpins all aspects of numeracy. Making, saying, extending and renaming numbers is our focus for the next couple of weeks. An example of a 4-digit number could be 4,235 is 4,000 + 200 + 30 + 5 but this could also be renamed as 4200 + 35 or 42 hundreds and 35 ones. Some examples of some recent numeracy work is shown below where students were playing ‘Round and Round the Garden’.

See you at our Fantastic Fete!

Professional Learning Community 4 (Grade 4)

Fete Fete Fete!

The Grade 4s have been working hard to bring everyone the best Lollyland in town. In PBL we’ve been working hard on learning how to present our stall and what prices everything should be.

We’ve been reading Charlie and the Chocolate factory and it’s made our mouths drool, we have been writing about all the fantastic lollies and chocolates. We’ve been working hard on our descriptions and Tier 2 words.

In Numeracy we have been working on our addition and subtraction strategies, this will hopefully come in handy at fete.

We can’t wait to see you at Lollyland on Thursday!

Professional Learning Community 5 (Grade 5)

Here in PLC 5 we are so excited for our Fete and many of us are looking forward to taking part in our Bin it to Win it Footy challenge or even taking our chances with our adaptation to the traditional Heads or Tails game, now involving water balloons! Please come along and support our school and explore the variety of stalls that we have available.

As many of you would be aware, we have NAPLAN coming up in Week 8 and 9. The students have been exploring the different types of questions they will receive in reading and will be completing a few practises in class to build up their stamina in all subject areas. We will continue to work on reading questions carefully and determining what it is asking before attempting each one.

Alongside this we are beginning to write a description about life as a convict and describe the journey and living conditions they would have faced. This will be a great lead up to our excursion to Sovereign Hill where we will step back in time and take on characters from the Gold Rush Era.

In Numeracy we will be looking at the 4 operations and learning efficient strategies in which to solve them, incorporating worded problems as we go, ensuring that once again students can decipher what it is that the questions are asking.

As always, a jam packed couple of weeks ahead!

Professional Learning Community 6 (Grade 6)

Dear Grade 6 families and friends,

We hope you are all well and excited about the latest developments in our learning journey!

As you know we've just returned from an exciting camp in Melbourne, where we had the opportunity to explore and learn about the city. The teachers who attended, as well as others from outside of the Delacombe PS community have all commented on how well the camp went. A huge thank you goes to Mrs Burns and to all of the teachers and support staff who helped to make the camp work and a massive thank you also, to all students for how well they represented the DPS values whilst on camp.

Back at school we've been making some great progress in our Numeracy, Writing, Reading and Project-Based Learning.

In Numeracy, we've been focusing on decimals, exploring their properties and applications in everyday life.

In Writing, we've been honing our narrative skills, crafting engaging stories with vivid characters and settings. This week we are using our experiences from Melbourne to inspire our stories.

In Reading, we've been expanding our vocabulary, discovering new words and expressions that can help us understand and enjoy a wide range of texts. We've been reading Uno’s Garden as a class text, challenging our imagination and provoking our curiosity.

In Project-Based Learning, we've been exploring systems of government, with a particular focus on government in Australia. We've been learning about the different levels of government, their roles and responsibilities, and how they work together to make decisions that affect us all.

Keep up the good work, Grade 6! You're all doing an amazing job!

Best regards,

PLC 6
