SAKG NEWS

Classes have settled into a rhythm in the kitchen and garden as we enter the middle of the term.  A variety of dishes are being whipped up across all year levels. Grades 3-6 have been making good use of the never ending zucchini and herbs which our garden continues to produce by making Italian Zucchini and Parmesan Soup and Herb Roti.  These have been accompanied by an all-time favourite, Honey Joys.  Grade 2 have also been making the soup, along with pinwheels and pancakes, with a big focus for the on developing their cutting skills.  And lastly our Grade 1s have been making Pizza Muffins and Banana and Berry smoothies.

Out in the garden quite a bit of planting and harvesting has been going on.  Students have been amazed by the rapid growth of the zucchinis and it is nice to see our tomatoes starting to ripen.  As garden beds have been cleared and weeded the next stage of planting has commenced with strawberry runners going in, along with lettuce seedlings and a range of herbs.  Worms are also a focus for this fortnight.  Students are learning about the important role they play in improving the soil, have been digging in worm castings along with feeding the worms we have.

The garden is also proving to be very popular during lunchtimes which is great to see.  Students, particularly those from the younger years are loving spending time with the animals, assisting with watering and weeding, digging in the compost bays, searching for potatoes.  There are always plenty of fun things and jobs to do!

Please come and support our fete this coming Thursday. Our amazing volunteers Mickey and Rob have been planting up lots of succulents, flowers and herbs which will be on sale at very special prices and Dawn has made some delicious plum, pineapple and rhubarb jams as along with zucchini relish. These will sold from the Grade 2 Plant/Produce/Bake/Cake stall.  There will be something there for everyone so don’t miss out.

And lastly a shout out again for volunteers who are able to assist with the running of SAKG program – we need you!  We welcome everyone, whether it be new parents/families or ones who have been at the school for several years. To be able to volunteer you will need to have a current Working with Children Check (Volunteer Card – free) which is available online, and to have completed an induction (information) session which we run here at school.  If you are interested in volunteering in the program please contact Mrs O’Brien, Kate, Lyn or see the ladies in the front office.
