Fourteen by Shannon Molloy
Genre: Memoir
Age recommendation: 15+
Reviewed by Ms Burke in the canteen
Rating: 4 stars
Fourteen is a compelling and emotional memoir by Shannon Molloy about growing up a gay young man in a small country town in Queensland. It is a brutally honest and engrossing page turner. Essential reading for anyone that feels they don’t fit in, but also a must read for anyone that takes part in shaming a fellow human for being different.
Shannon writes about his time at a Catholic boys college where he is incessantly bullied by some students and teachers and the devastating effect it has on him. Attending school for Shannon is painful and traumatic and through his eloquent descriptive writing, he gives us an insight into the treatment he experiences and the effect this has on him.
The reader gets a glimpse of the nastiness and hostility that Shannon endures and the lengths he goes through to survive the school day. Sad to think this is a true story.
I loved this book and even though I found it heartbreaking, I applauded Shannon’s resilience, beautiful human spirit and self-acceptance by the close of the book. Highly recommended reading.

One of Us Is Lying - Karen M McManus
Genre: Young adult, murder mystery.
Age recommendation: 12-13+
Reviewed by Elsie Steele of 8H
Brief summary:
One of Us Is Lying follows 4 teen students as they find themselves suspects for the murder of their classmate, Simon Kelleher. None of them know him well and are in detention for something they all claim they didn’t do, when Simon drops dead. Following his death, a chain of weirdly dark and mysterious posts that appear on his previous gossip site; About That, spark fear and blame across the community. Suddenly, Bronwyn, Addy, Cooper and Nate find themselves the centre of attention 24/7, and anything they say could possibly land them a spot in jail.
Rating: 4.5 stars!
I loved reading One of Us Is Lying! It’s cleverly thought out, mysterious, and left me wanting more at the end of the book (I got the sequel, One of Us Is Next)! There’s never a dull moment and it’s not gruesome, even though it’s a murder mystery. Every chapter is written from the point of view of one of the four main characters, which gives the readers a better understanding of the story. I strongly recommend this book for anyone wanting to dive into a world of mystery, excitement, a bit of romance, fear and adventure.
