Decisions, Decisions…Year 10 Subject Selection Time
It has been wonderful to see the intent with which Year 10 have embraced the subject selection process. My message to them has been simple-this is important, but it is not the end of the universe if you are uncertain. We have three weeks of discussion, soul searching and questioning before climbing the very first hurdle. And even then it is not the end of the world…research tells us that people of their generation are likely to have three to four careers over their working lifespan. Yes, that’s careers, not jobs.
It can be a confusing time for parents as well, so the information below is designed to explain the process simply.
- Students have been emailed a form that is specific to them.
- The form asks initially which stream (HSC or IB) and then leads the student through the selection process. It will lead students to make the choices that fit the parameters. I.e. they have to choose an English course, can only choose a certain number of Science subjects, must choose Advanced Maths if they wish to do Extension 1 Maths. In this regard the form is pretty user friendly.
- It is vital that students choose their preferences in their preferred order-do not just make the choices according to the alphabetical dropdowns in the form. The algorithm that the timetable program uses prioritises the order in which students place their choices. If you really wish to do a subject, make it your first choice!
- The form includes three fall-back choices-again, the order of these is important to the process.
- Student choices and college staffing and resourcing drive what subjects run. Not all subjects will run, so the above steps are vital to us having all the data we need to be able to make important decisions.
- Should students not receive a choice, or if that course does not run, there will be a counselling process throughout Term 3 to help with choices.
- The form is due on the Friday, 3 July 2020. It remains open up until that point, so if there is a change of mind a student can still re-enter the change on the form.
- Parents need to print out the student choices and sign to confirm that they have been part of the decision making process. These need to be returned to Mr Heffer at the college in hard copy.
- Students who wish to attempt TVET (TAFE VET) courses need to identify this on the bottom of the printed form. They should still complete all of the required choices in the form, as TAFE courses do not always run for all subjects.
