Visual Arts Giant Junk Food Sculpture by Baxter Wilkinson, Year 8

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As we close Week 7 of remote learning, we, along with the teachers of the 5-8 community, wanted to take the time to 'thank you', for your efforts in supporting our students (your children) in their remote learning journey.  Without your patience, support and feedback our learning experiences for our students would be non-existent.

As the teachers of many students in the 5-8 community, we are looking forward to seeing their smiles, hearing their laughter and conversation and being greeted at the door, as we gear up to re-nter the college full time, on the 9th of June.

Thank YOU!

Years 6-8 Partnerships

Australia Post has just launched a writing opportunity for students, parents and the wider community to share their pandemic experiences.  They are working with the National Archives of Australia, where the Dear Australia letters will be kept for future generations. This will enable all Australians to record their impressions of this remarkable time.  The '6-8 Partnerships for the Future' classroom have started to write their reflective piece where they are preparing to send them off to Australia Post.  The writing campaign can be found here: https://auspost.com.au/dear-australia

Here is a short snippet of a student's reflective writing piece:

Dear Australia,

Hello, my name is Harley. I'm 13 turning 14 in November. I'm in Year 7, I'm in the 6-8 ‘Partnerships of the Future’ classroom at St Augustine’s College.

Covid-19 has affected me a lot, not able to go outside, not able to see my friends, not able to play my favourite sports and staying at home all day. It made me feel very, very sad and angry because I couldn't hang out with my friends.

Due to the Corona-virus, we started a lockdown. This meant we had to learn from home and remote learning commenced on the 24th of March 2020.   At home, I now have to do all of my school work.

I have also been helping my mum with some of the cooking I have been doing this in outdoor ed.  I have cooked jacket potatoes, chicken and tacos on the fire at home in the backyard.  I have been going on lots of bike rides through Cussen Park (A wildlife park we have in our town).

Remote Learning

We have had some of our Years 5 and 6 students remote learning from school. So far they have found it a positive, although very different, experience.

Aboriginal Spirituality Learning

During Week 5 of remote learning, the Year 8 students began their new topic on Aboriginal Spirituality. During this learning, students were to create an Aboriginal dot painting.

Kahlia Rathbone and Charli Westerveld created the dot paintings shown below.

Project Week

During Week 6 all Year 8 students engaged in Project Week. There were four options to choose from; designing and preparing a three course meal for their families, planning their dream holiday, deciding on the five greatest players in a particular sport or designing a new tourist attraction for Australia. Students worked on benchmark tasks each day, before submitting their final product on Friday. It was great to see many of our students submit creative and imaginative final products!
