A Trivial Pursuit

I have a small confession to make – I am a recovering Game Show addict.

It’s been hard to admit but these days I can speak about it without getting the buzzer twitch in my hands. I can now walk past a Herald Sun without fumbling through the pages for just one ‘Songlines’ or ‘Who Am I?” I’ll admit that I still hard drive record ‘Think Tank’ and ‘Hard Quiz’… but now I monitor how often I watch and I’m not afraid to delete repeated episodes. I know – I may sound like a hero, but the battle is day-by-day and question-by-question.

Funny? Yep… but kind of serious too.

I honestly have been on a lot of game shows – Millionaire, The Rich List, The Power of 10, 1 Versus 100 (in the Mob), Deal or No Deal, The Chase, Temptation and Sale of the Century (for those who can remember back that far). Plus a couple of others…

I just really like the challenge and my brain seems to be geared to appreciating and recalling the weird and the wonderful. This hunger to learn and to find connections is something that has very much become a part of my teaching both here at BHCS and in the work I do with other schools. We teach from who we are. So in this lockdown, I’ve been using my love of quiz to try and help connect people.

Last Monday night we had 10 school families ‘zoom in’ to take part in a Trivia Night. I have been running similar community events with the Staff and Years 11-12, but this night was great because we had a real mix of ages. I had planned on just three rounds… but we kept going… and going… and going. We quizzed on topics like Baby Animal Names, English Idiomatic Phrases, Famous First Lines, Misheard Lyrics and even a round on things that have the name Corona but aren’t related to the virus… think Toyota, cigars and the movie ‘Tangled’.

Special mention should go to the Roma, Giles-Kay and Sawatzky families for narrowly losing out to Mr Campbell in the ‘How Well Do You Know John Campbell’ round!
