Careers News

With all the changes which have occurred in recent weeks, I would like to bring to your attention these matters:

  • Work experience is still on hold until further notice and hopefully this will resume in Term 3.
  • Please keep an eye on the McCarthy Careers page for information on pages set up for each Year group and for updated university and application information as it becomes available. This site is constantly being updated.
  • Visits by universities have been replaced by some online webinars which are communicated to students via morning notices or posts in their Google Classroom.
  • A visit this week by ex-McCarthy student Jye O’Dell who is now Lieutenant Commander Jye O’Dell, Royal Australian Navy  in his role as Regional Senior Military Recruiting Officer based in Sydney. Jye spoke to me about plans for getting information to our students in 2021 about ADF Gap years, entry pathways (Trades, General and Officer entry), university scholarships, Royal Military College at Duntroon and ADFA.  More information will be coming in later months and in 2021.

Jye also took the opportunity to tour the College and to meet several of his former teachers.

Year 12 Students

Information is being provided to Year 12 students via their Google Classroom each week.  This includes careers newsletters and other matters including apprenticeships and gap year options for 2021. Students are advised to check this regularly and parents can also access these newsletters which are updated weekly on the McCarthy Careers page in this section:  Career Newsletters

Several university early entry schemes are now open and some are accepting students on the basis of their Year 11 results.

UAC have made the following online resources also available to assist students at this time and all courses being offered in 2021 will be available on their website from early August:

White Card Courses held in Week 9

In Week 9 McCarthy had 40 students in Years 9-12 choose to do the White Card Course to enable them to do work experience or paid work on construction sites. This is needed by apprentices, labourers, some engineers and architects.

The facilitator of the two courses was very impressed with the conduct and behaviour of the students who attended.

Careers Booklets on University Info Evening 2020, UAC 2021, Year 12 2020 and Year 10 2020

These booklets have been printed and made available to students this term.  Please ask your child to see their copy if you are interested.

University Reforms regarding course costs

Recently, Federal Minister for Education, Dan Tehan, made announcements which will impact on students attending university from 2021.More details and FAQ can be found here:
