Meet our INTERVENTION staff

My name is Daniel Cook and I am a Numeracy Intervention Teacher. I joined SoGS in June 2022 and thoroughly enjoy my time as a part of this community. I work predominantly in the junior and middle school (P-3), but have the flexibility to work across all year levels. I am extremely passionate about mathematics and numeracy and want all students to develop the same passion as me, and succeed in whatever they do.

Hi, for those of you who don’t know me,

I’m Rachel Kennedy and I am currently working as a Number Intervention teacher.  I have been a part of the beautiful SoGS community for quite a while and have loved it from the very beginning.  I am blessed to work with so many wonderful staff members, students and parents.  I have a passion for teaching number and sharing my knowledge with the students.  I endeavor to impart my love of number onto the students so that they gain confidence and approach challenges with perseverance and an ‘I can do it’ attitude.  When I’m not teaching, I love spending time with my family, friends and two fur babies.

Numeracy News

School of the Good Shepherd is continuing its Intensive Partnership with MACS to improve mathematical outcomes in 2023.

This year we will continue to work on the goals of:

  • Improving student engagement in mathematics
  • Building teacher efficacy in teaching mathematics

These goals are in line with our goals from our School Improvement Plan of

  • To cultivate a learning environment that focuses on shared pedagogy based on evidence and achieving growth for all students.
  • To empower the students to be active learners, being able to co-construct their learning in partnership with their teacher.

On Monday the 20th of February, our staff engaged in professional development to reflect on the great initiatives we put in place in 2022. All staff engaged in discussions on why creating a culture of discourse/dialogue is important in mathematics.  Dialogue can assist students in

  • further developing their mathematical reasoning
  • learning new mathematical vocabulary
  • improving their problem solving skills
  • deepening their thinking about concepts.

Staff explored instructional routines and questioning strategies that will engage students in discussion and mathematical thinking. Students can greatly benefit from engaging in mathematical dialogue with their peers, staff and parents.

Each year level will be trialling a Maths ‘Talk Move’ over the next 2 terms with their students to promote mathematical dialogue. Here are some prompts that we will be using with the students to continue to extend their understanding in mathematics.
