News from One/Two

The Year 1 and 2 children have had a busy couple of weeks. They have been revisiting their phonics sounds and reading and spelling with these sounds. Both teachers have been so impressed by the children's and parents' dedication to the weekly spelling words and readers. Thank you, everyone! In Mathematics the children have been looking at the attributes of shapes and counting sequences of numbers.

This term, the topic we are studying is Places and Spaces 'Our Community'. Recently, the children have been discussing what makes a community. They traveled via Google Maps down to Yarra Junction and noted all the places they liked to visit.  As a class, they also made a list of local businesses that serve our community.

We are fortunate to have a visitor from a local business this Friday afternoon; Dale Feim from Dalcorp. The children have been busy writing questions about what they could ask Dale about his business. We have had some very clever and interesting questions.

Excitingly also, in the next couple of weeks, the 1/2 children will be designing and making a model community out of cardboard. Keep an eye out for their marvelous creations in the next newsletter.

Please note there has been a change of date for the 1/2 assembly. It is no longer on the 27th of March now. However, it has been changed to Week 3 of Term 2 on Monday the 8th of May. This will be an afternoon session at 2:15 pm.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures of the last couple of weeks during Mathematics and Literacy time.

Inquiry

This Term our school is looking at 'Community' as part of our Inquiry lessons. Part of our Inquiry lessons involves who can help us in the community.

We have got a confirmed date of interest coming up in the next few weeks. There will be an email detailing more information to follow.

March 20th: Visit from Yarra Junction Police- During our Inquiry unit we will be learning about who can help us in the community and where/how we can get help. We have arranged for the Yarra Junction Police to come to school and have a chat with the students.

We are also hoping to have the CFA come and chat with us as well!

We are looking forward to seeing you all this Friday evening the 3rd of March for our 1/2 BBQ at 5-7 pm.

Please be in touch if you have any questions.

Kindly,

Jacqui Tarquinio and Terry Foley
