Welcome back to Term 3!
This term, many students will be undertaking a Close Study of Text unit, which means they will spend the term focusing on one text in detail such as a novel, film or play. Please take some time to discuss your child’s text with them as it will be the focus of their formal assessment task this term.
This term Year 11 Advanced started a new topic Module B Critical Study of a text. Their prescribed text for this term is ‘The Great Gatsby’ written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. To launch this topic, students participated in a 1920’s themed escape room. Students work in teams to solve puzzles based on key contextual information about the time period. At each stations students worked together to investigate and solve the puzzle before completing the final challenge; decoding the secret quote. This allowed students to engage with a variety of contextual concerns of the time and develop a good understanding of the world in which F. Scott Fitzgerald lived.
On Monday 7th August 9L1 and 9R1 attended a production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at the Seymour Centre. This production was widely enjoyed by students and developed their understanding of the play’s themes and concepts. Thank you Mrs Suters and Mr Jung for taking the students.
Last term 10L1 and 10R1 completed a wide reading project as part of the unit Future Worlds: Speculative Fiction. They each read a novel completed a portfolio of work choosing tasks that suited their abilities and interests. Below are some examples of the impressive work created by our students:
Lara C, 1984 by George Orwell
Paige O, The Giver by Lois Lowry
Mary-Anne, Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Oliver F, The Road to Winter by Mark Smith
On Wednesday 9th August, Years 9 and 10 attended an incursion by Bell Shakespeare Company. Year 9 viewed an adapted version of Romeo and Juliet titled ‘Such Sweet Sorrow’, helping students to understand the key themes of the play. Year 10 viewed an adapted version of Macbeth, which explored the motivations of the characters through the key soliloquies by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Both productions were fun and interactive, allowing both students and teachers to get involved in the action! Thank you to Mrs Bridle for organising this wonderful opportunity for our students.
