Aboriginal Education

Term 3 is shaping up to be another busy term for Aboriginal Education programs at Camden High School. Staff Development Day saw staff travel off site for some fresh air and local insights on Dharawal Country. A huge thank you to Brian and his team at the Camden Park Environmental Education Centre for showing us the first documented meeting place of the Dharawal people and Govenor Lachlan Macquarie and sharing with us the significance of scare trees, marker trees and birthing trees and much more throughout the morning. We are looking forward to including these Dharawal perspectives in our teaching and supporting all our students.

We also celebrated NAIDOC Week with a whole school assembly, smoking ceremony performed by Uncle Eddie Burge and Uncle Les Atkinson, a dance performance by our incredible dancers and our friends at Camden South Public School, cultural workshops in art, weaving, boomerang throwing language as well as bush tucker cooking and tasting. This was a wonderful week long celebration with all our students coming together to embrace First Nations culture.

This is also a great time to acknowledge some of our deadly First Nations students. Mikaylee, Breanna and Holly who not only hosted our NAIDOC assembly but have been exceptional cultural role models for their First Nations peers and the wider school community throughout their time at Camden High. These young women are nearing the end of Year 12 and are hardworking and driven with their studies, they embrace opportunities for growth and are passionate about their culture. It has been a pleasure supporting their academic and cultural journey and we wish them well with their exams.
