Curriculum Matters - Mathematics

Exciting News!

Knowledge of number facts and strategies to undertake mental calculations are essential to a mathematician's toolbox and a vital life skill for successful citizens.

Lockleys North Primary School has again had the opportunity to actively participate in Numerical Acumen. This is an online program developed by The Potts-Baker Institute at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, which caters for early and middle primary students through to middle school students and beyond.

At the beginning of the school year Yr 3/4 students in Torrens established their own online account and have consequently worked on improving their number skills – in particular mental calculation strategies. Time has been available during lesson time at school and as part of our Torrens Homework Grid. Many students have shown exceptional dedication and responsibility while striving to better their scores.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the People’s Choice Credit Union and Casio Australia the students were able to join in the Numerical Acumen Challenge during term 2 free of cost.

LNPS has the opportunity to nominate 9 award winners this year. Categories for medals are performance, dedication or improvement.

Congratulations and very well done to

Charlie Benger

Natasha Fazzalari

Lewis Killoh

Dimitri Kordalis

Georgio Zissopoulos

These students will receive their medals at an awards evening to be held at Prince Alfred College at Kent Town on Thursday, 13 August.

Next newsletter will contain photos from this special awards night.

Even though the Numerical Acumen Challenge for 2015 has been completed, access to the website remains and children are encouraged to still use their account to hone their skills and work towards greater automaticity of their number facts.

Up to 10 minutes a day will make a huge difference to students' knowledge and skill level. Good luck! Show persistence!
