Curriculum Matters
Mathematics in Semester 2
In maths this semester, students will be investigating measurement, chance, data, financial literacy, direction & location, and shape. They will revise number and be given the opportunity to apply their number knowledge, understanding and skills within different contexts.
Students will continue to work on their understanding of multiplication facts and recognise the connections between addition, subtraction and division.
Fractions
Students will locate familiar fractions on a number line. They will recognise common equivalent fractions in familiar contexts and make connections between fractions and decimal notations up to two decimal places.
Financial Literacy
Students will be given numerous opportunities to represent money values in various ways and count out change from financial transactions. They will continue to solve simple purchasing problems on a daily basis.
Location and Direction
Students will be given the opportunity to match positions and interpret information contained in maps.
Measurement
Students will use metric units for length, mass and capacity and use scaled instruments to measure temperatures, lengths, shapes and objects.
Chance and Data
Students will interpret and compare data displays and conduct chance experiments and list possible outcomes. Students will be able to list the probabilities of everyday events and construct data displays from given or collected data.
Shape
Students will make models of three-dimensional objects and compare areas of regular and irregular shapes using informal units.
As discussed on a previous page students will be given the opportunities to develop the above mathematical skills within real life situations and using hands on materials.
