Carnevale & Chinese New Year Celebrations

Carnevale

All things Italian at Brighton Primary School

A Carnevale ogni scherzo Vale !!! (At Carnevale, Anything Goes!!!)

Evviva Carnevale!!! Over the past 20 years Carnevale has been a celebration by all students and staff at Brighton Primary School.

On Tuesday 25th February (martedi grasso), Brighton Primary  exploded into colour. Students and staff joined in the celebrations by wearing masks and dressing up as someone different for a day, to disguise themselves.

During Italian lessons, their teacher, Nunzia Esposito, led an inquiry into HOW? WHY? WHEN? WHERE? Carnevale was celebrated in Italy.  Students learnt about the cultural and religious beliefs in Italy and how Carnevale is linked to Lent and Easter. As part of the days celebrations students watched a Commedia dell’arte performance by theatre company, Make a Scene.

Fun was had by all and the staff were treated to a morning tea of Bomboloni, Crostoli. Ciambellone e Crostata.

We are now looking forward to June, when the school will celebrate Italian day (Festa della Repubblica). A special assembly is held where preps will sing in Italian, students eat pizza, gelato and grade 6 students perform a play in Italian. The school has also held student tours to Italy. During their travels, students immerse themselves in the culture of the country and have the opportunity to attend a local school in Carpineto Romano in the Region of Lazio.

Chinese New Year

To celebrate the Chinese New Year, Grade 5s and 6s watched and learnt about the Chinese Lion Dance. In Chinese culture, lion dances are believed to bring good fortune and chase away evil spirits. Students learnt about the dance routines and had a chance to give the traditional instruments a go. This close encounter with the friendly beast will certainly bring our students good luck and success in this coming year!
