News from grade 5 - Reader’s and Writer’s Notebook:
Teachers have been modelling how to setup the Reader’s and Writer’s Notebook and students have been working hard to set up their own Reader’s and Writer’s Notebooks.
The purpose of the Reader’s Notebook is to be a personal ‘storeroom’ of students’ thoughts and feelings while you read. It is a place for them to access them for later review, reflection, and sharing. It will help students determine their Reading Goal.
The purpose of the Writer’s Notebook is to record reactions. It gives students a place to write down what makes them angry or sad or amazed, to write about what they noticed and don’t want to forget. It will help students determine their Writing Goal. A writer’s notebook gives you a place to live like a writer!
This is what the students have to say about them:
Tayla 5B: “In the Writer’s Notebook I like how you can write down ideas about anything from the book you are reading or billboards around the streets”. Reader’s Notebook – “I can use the reading log to see where I am up to in the book and how much I have been reading”.
Parker 5B: “I like writing my ideas for writing in the Writer’s Notebook, that I get from my reading book, over the weekend when I play cricket or footy I get new ideas”.
Matilda (5A): “I enjoy being creative in my Reader’s and Writer’s Notebook to make it look nice in my own way for example - Why I read and the Heart Map”.
Imogen (5A): “It’s fun because you get to write down all of the things you’ve read, words, words and more words”.
Sofia (5C): I like it because we do mind maps and I can put all my ideas in there. We can be creative and use lots of colours. If I need to refer to something in my reading or writing I can use the Notebooks to support with my learning.
Seb (5C): I like putting all my ideas into a book and organising it in colour.
Jack (5C): I like it when we find about information we can make notes in out Notebooks and use mind maps to organise our thinking. You can use colours to separate sections of the mind map.
Canberra Newsletter:
Students spent the week learning a new program on their iPads - Pages. They designed their own Newsletter based on their experiences in Canberra using different styles of writing.
Alex H (5D): “I really enjoyed it because we got to make it sound like a real Newsletter writing facts about different places in Canberra and not just a recount of our experiences there”.
Abbie (5D): “I liked how you could choose the different places in Canberra for the story and the type of story and design the layout and where the images went”.
Kate (5D): “I liked learning a new program (Pages) and how you could split up the page into different sections, putting the most interesting news at the start of your paper”.
Sabella (5D): “You could use your imagination and link it into camp. You could write a mystery or horror”.
