Maths Enrichment Program

Dear Parents

Re: Maths Enrichment Program

Late last year, we shared that Brighton Primary School would be offering an enrichment program for those students in grades 3-6 who require additional support (intervention) and those who require additional challenge (extension) in mathematics. We are pleased to announce this program will begin in week 1 of term 2 every Thursday morning from 8:00 - 8:40 am. This program is strictly by invitation only. The invitees have been selected after a thorough analysis of our school data, taking into account summative maths assessment results as well as teacher professional judgement.

At Brighton Primary School, we have students who would benefit from maths extension, in addition to the differentiated instruction that students receive in the classroom. Students invited to attend these extension classes will participate in a ten-week program in either term 2 or term 3. These sessions will run from 8.00 to 8.40am every Thursday morning. Tasks will include open ended and investigative problems requiring students to use a range of problem-solving strategies.

For students requiring additional math support, we will also offer intervention classes over 20 weeks during both term 2 and 3. These classes will also be held on Thursday mornings from 8.00 to 8.40 am with a focus on math fundamentals and key conceptual understandings.

There will be approximately 20 students in each of the four math classes running every Thursday morning with the two assigned teachers alternating each week. These 8 teachers who have kindly volunteered to provide this additional math enrichment are outlined below:

GRADE LEVELMATH FOCUSTEACHERS
Grade 3 & 4InterventionMr. Kolivas & Ms. Kirk
Grade 3 & 4ExtensionMr. Yeaman & Ms. James
Grade 5 & 6InterventionMs. Peric & Ms. Daniel
Grade 5 & 6ExtensionMr. Lyon & Ms. Devries

We appreciate that these sessions may be highly sought after and ask that you trust the professional judgement of the teachers as they determine the students invited to attend these classes. Parents of invitees will soon receive an email invitation to take part in these free programs, requesting parental consent and acceptance. At the conclusion of term 3, we will invite feedback on the program and review its effectiveness.

If you have any additional questions, please contact Andrew Yeaman (G4 teacher) who is coordinating the Maths Enrichment Program or myself.

We continue to look at ways to support and strengthen both literacy and numeracy at Brighton Primary School and look forward to commencing our Maths Enrichment Program.

Steve
