Update from the GREEN Team

The Green team are continuing to focus on the Waste Module as part of the ResourceSmart Schools Sustainability Certification. We are currently working through the 63 actions to continually audit what our school is doing and identifying where there are opportunities for further action.

We have successfully implemented compost systems across the whole school. There are compost buckets in each learning space, staff room and kitchen dining room so that all our organic waste can be composted and utilised in our Kitchen Garden Program. The classroom compost bins accept all lunch food scraps including citrus, bread and dairy as well as tissues, paper towel and even pencil shavings.

There are recycling bins in all learning spaces too which is collected by council each week. Any used paper, cardboard, cartons, bottles etc. can be placed in these bins. Some classrooms even have tubs for textas and pens that no longer work to be collected and recycled at Officeworks as well as soft plastic packaging that can be recycled at local supermarkets.

Any other waste will head to landfill.

New signage will be made for each classroom to ensure everyone knows exactly what can be placed in each bin. Hopefully one day we won’t need a bin for landfill at all!

We all have a part to play in helping reduce our ecological footprint on the Earth.

Nude Food Competition

Congratulations to everyone who has made an effort to have nude food in their lunchboxes this term. It is great to see so many families rethinking their choices and refusing single use items. This means less waste is going to landfill. Take a look at some of these great examples from 1/2S.

Remember if your class has the highest number of Nude Food lunches for the term your class will get to ride the smoothie bike and enjoy some delicious, healthy smoothies in the last week of term!

Recycling Donations

Do you have any bread clips or bottle tops at home?

We will be collecting these to reuse and pass on to organisations that transform them into other useful products. The Green Team will be researching and deciding which organisation will receive the clips and tops and will give you an update soon. Please ensure bottle tops are clean and place them into the box at the office

Ride2School Day

Thank you to all who joined more than 350,000 students across the nation to ride, scoot or walk to school on Ride2School Day.

Remember kids are healthier and happier when they are active every day. Riding or walking to school is a great opportunity to get active. Being active promotes brain plasticity and stimulates growth of new neural pathways. Along with the health and learning benefits, it also reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and friends and is a great way to reduce your ecological footprint.

We celebrated Ride2School Day on Monday 16th March by making delicious berry and mango smoothies using our very own smoothie bike.

A big thank you to all who supported the event especially the wonderful Green Team members who showed fantastic leadership, Betty and the wonderful parent helpers who assisted with the washing up!

What do trees mean to you?

The clothes we wear can tell a story about what's important to us and we want these t-shirts to share a message about the world you want to live in.
