Year 5/6 Camp

Recently our oldest students spent a week on school camp in Canberra. As well as being a wonderful opportunity for the children to spend a week away from home building their independence and getting to know each other and their new teachers, the week was a perfect way for our students to further their understanding of Austraian Government and civics.

During the week (in addition to two nine hour bus journeys) we found time to visit;

  • The Australian national museum
  • Parliament House
  • The Australian War Memorial
  • The Australian Electoral commission
  • Old Parliament House and the Museum of Australian Democracy
  • The Governor General's Residence
  • The National Capital Exhibition
  • Questacon
  • The CSIRO
  • The Australian Mint
  • The High Court
  • The National Gallery of Australia

Whilst some of the attrractions sounded a little bit 'dry' on paper, the skills of the educators in bringing the learning to life was amazing to see and I was amazed by how our students returned to St Kilda as experts in the working of the Australian Government, constitution and elections.

The students were as respectful and fun as we have come to expect and, despite the very early starts and constant rain, we came back in great spirits after a wonderful week.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

School Tours

Schools closures permitting, Michelle and I are conducting school tours to prospective Foundation parents of St Kilda Park Primary School.

Michelle and I will welcome visitors to our School and give an overview of our curriculum, values and ethos. We will also be available to answer specific questions about transition from Kindergarten to Foundation, and what’s on offer in terms of our programs and facilities. A walking tour of Foundation facilities and other learning areas, including our specialist subjects (The Arts – Visual and Performing, Italian and Library) will follow. Our first tour for Wednesday 25th March has been cancelled. Please contact Kat if you wish to book for any future dates.
