Year 1/2 Term 3 Overview

Year 1/2 Term Three

Welcome back to Term 3 at St John's. We hope that you enjoyed a well deserved break with your families and look forward to continuing our learning journeys together.

Religious Education:

Our initial focus for this term is identifying and explaining the figures in the local parish and the wider church community and identifying groups we belong to.

We will continue developing the students' understanding of belonging, through Bible stories. This will include looking at the disciples and their journeys. We shall be visiting the Church and investigating the symbols and icons that can be found in all churches and understood by all who see them.

Mathematics

In Mathematics we will continue our professional development with Monash University (EMC3- Exploring Mathematical Challenges) where we meet and plan with Maths Leaders to provide a challenging and extensive maths program.

Our topics will include:

Time

  • comparing and ordering events using everyday language
  • connecting days of the week to familiar events
  • telling time to the half-hour and quarter hour
  • describing the duration using months, weeks and seasons

Place Value

  • counting and representing numbers to 100 (and beyond) in different ways
  • comparing and ordering numbers using place value
  • finding patterns in the number chart to support addition and subtraction beyond 100
  • recognising the size of a number by where it is placed on a number line.

Multiplication/Division

  • Representing multiplication and division by grouping items into sets and dividing collections
  • representing multiplication problems with diagrams
  • solving simple multiplication and division problems in various ways.

Mass/Weight

  • using informal units of measurement, e.g. hefting, to order and compare objects based on mass.

English

In Reading, we will continue to work on developing fluency and expression with a focus in reading groups, on the following grammatical foci:

  • chunking
  • nouns
  • adjectives
  • verbs
  • adverbs

In Writing, our focus for the start of term will be on Procedural Writing, which uses factual texts that tell us how to do or make something. Procedures = how to.

We will learn the features of procedural texts including adding clear instructions by using verbs and adverbs.

Later in the term we will also be learning about Persuasive Writing. Students will be introduced to different persuasive devices. They will have a range of opportunities to practise their use of persuasive language before completing a persuasive piece, linking with their inquiry investigations.

Social & Emotional Learning

Our focus for SEL this term is on self management and the development of resilience.

Students will work on identifying personal strengths and describe how these strengths are useful in school or family life. We will be using the Zones of Regulation curriculum to support their understanding and development of skills for  Identifying personal strengths.

Inquiry

How do we inspire change?

Students will use the question, ‘What is in our local area?’ They will develop knowledge of the local area, Melbourne and finally investigate the States and Territories of Australia.

Through this inquiry we will be exploring significant buildings, statues and landmarks around Melbourne. Students will create and design an advertisement for a chosen State or Territory based on the key features of that place.

Home Learning

  • Reading - Daily reading and recording in reading records.
  • Reading Eggs - Developing skills in word knowledge and comprehension
  • Mathematics - Tasks will be set in Mathletics relating to classroom topics to consolidate learning. It is not expected that students would complete all tasks in one sitting. Students are encouraged to revisit topics from last term and consolidate their understanding by using the available mathletics tasks relating to these topics.

Specialists

Students will have specialist classes towards the end of the week (please see timetable below). They will be required to wear their sport uniforms on Tuesday and Friday. They will also need to bring in their library bag and books on a Friday.
