Breaksea House News

Last night as I walked to chapel with some of the girls from Breaksea I was asked how many weeks were left in the term, and we both had a laugh as we realised that this is only the end of Week Three. So much has been happening for the students of Breaksea and already there is a lot to share.

Firstly, over the holidays Rachel Henderson competed in Equestrian events in Perth, coming away with many awards. She is a quiet achiever in Breaksea and we want to congratulate her on her recent success.

The winter netball season is in full swing and last weekend there was a big netball carnival in Albany. Many of the girls were involved and were exhausted by the end of the weekend. We are also looking forward to the upcoming Hockey tournament in Perth and I am so proud of the many training sessions each of the girls attend.

Olympic fever took over in Breaksea, with the house decorated by the Olympic colours, a large set of Olympic rings over the TV, and the medal tally on the wall with a large world map showing each country that the girls were supporting. Before the games began, each girl drew a country out of a bowl and that became their nation for the duration of the games. Everyone champions Australia, but after this there were many different nations being supported. There were some geography lessons needed initially, as girls needed to learn where their nation was, but the support for nations like Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea, the United States and China were strong.  I was lucky enough to draw Japan and proudly supported their great successes. It was a lot of fun gathering together to watch matches or races and learn about the various Olympians.

The Year Ten students have been on Work Experience over the last week. Some students have been living closer to their work placement and others stayed in boarding and were transported to their various destinations. Natalie Heron and Kobie Featherstone have kept us entertained this week from the Dolphin Centre and Aquarium in Bunbury, with photos and videos of feeding baby turtles, watching dolphins on a cruise, holding starfish, supporting a baby Joey or even the hot chips they ate for lunch. It’s also been fascinating to hear Rosie Page and Ava Smith return each afternoon from Albany Hospital and Rhiannon Williams-Jolley from Mount Lockyer Primary School with so many stories and experiences. I was privileged to visit both a number of boys from Eclipse, Jaelan Scott and Brianna Harris at their workplaces and loved seeing their enjoyment and watching their maturity on display.  We look forward to having everyone back in Breaksea this week.

Thank you so much to all the families who have sent in empty Moccona jars for us to decorate and fill with Rocky Road for the P&F Kingfish Fair. If you have any more to donate, please send them in.

We have enjoyed celebrating a number of birthdays recently and know there are many more in the next two weeks. Happy birthday goes to Chenae Wreford, Jaelan Scott and Caris Rae who celebrated in the school holidays, Natalie Heron celebrated turning 16 on Saturday and Lahnee Reid-Harries celebrates her birthday today. Many happy returns girls.
