The Lester Youth prize - school workshop

The Visual Arts Department recently hosted a weekend workshop with Australian contemporary painter, Desiree Crossing, in conjunction with The Lester Prize awarding College student, Jasmine Slatter, 1st Prize in the Years 7-9 School Category last year.

Desiree guided students from Years 10-12 through a realistic portraiture study using oil paints. She walked them step-by-step through the painting process, from mixing colours and identifying warm and cool hues, to applying dark tones and slowly building up to lighter tints of colour. She emphasised working softly and loosely with oil paints to create realism. The students really enjoyed the exercise, and Desiree made them feel comfortable and confident in their abilities.

Dungeons and Dragons & STEM Drone Clubs

The Dungeon’s & Dragons Club is resuming again this term. We will have a meeting on Monday 26 July at lunchtime in B4 to discuss the campaigns on offer, what days they will be on and who would like to play them. At the present time there are 2-3 student run campaigns being organised, but if any student would like to run another adventure please catch up with Mr Connellan as soon as possible please. To make it a less arduous task, the College has bought a large number of ready to play campaigns, which are available for the students to run.

The STEM Drone Club is resuming next week on Tuesday afternoons (3:30pm – 4:30pm) and again on Thursday mornings (7:00am – 8:00am). Everyone is welcome and no experience is needed. The College has enough drones for all who turn up to have a go! We are going to be making new obstacles to fly in/around/through this term in the woodwork facilities, and most likely on the Tuesday afternoons. So come along and try your hand at the future of transport and home deliveries!

Athletics Training

Athletics training recommenced on Friday of this week. Thank you to all the students showing a passion for athletics and making it down to our first session.

All students are welcome to attend the College morning training sessions to improve their athletics skills. Last year, John XXIII College achieved our team goal and stayed in the ACC A-Division Athletics Carnival. This year our aim is to do the same and hopefully some more! Training takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:00-8:00am in the lead up to the ACC A Division Athletics Carnival. Please find the full schedule below.

John XXIII College Surfing

Trials commenced this week for our College Surfing teams. All students who attended the first trial are to be commended for their punctuality and commitment to the first session at Trigg Beach at the very chilly time of 6:00am. It was lovely to have many parents stay and view the session and support in the shuttling of surfboards and other equipment for our students.

Good luck to all students in the next two trials where our teams will be selected for the WA State Surfing Titles.

Congratulations

Congratulations to the Year 9 and 10 students from John XXIII College that made the Claremont Development squad; Aidan Kavanagh, Joseph Hopkins, Owen Simpson, William Thomas, Wim Parker, Jake Soutar and Samuel Laing. The program provides talented players the experience of being involved at a higher level whilst providing them with an insight into their WAFL Club.
