The Young Leaders of the Central West Summit

From Mrs Claudia McCalman, Senior Years Coordinator

Yesterday, six Prefects attended The Young Leaders of the Central West Summit where they listened to guest speakers and held workshops discussing what issues are of highest priority to youth in rural and regional NSW. It was an informative and worthwhile day and the Prefects are looking forward to feeding back their learning into our school community.

Kinross Wolaroi Success at CWA Public Speaking

From Ms Justina Holland, Debating & Public Speaking Coordinator

Kinross Wolaroi have achieved exceptional results this week in their participation of the Annual CWA public speaking competition. On Monday 23 May, Alice Scholte Year 8 gained first place presenting a very thought-provoking speech which discussed the human species as an unusual animal. While Chaitra Avirneni, in Year 7 came second discussing the diversity of the world and that her desire for unity is something of which she is proud. They were competing against 22 other students across the Central West and were excellent ambassadors for the School.

On Wednesday 25 May, Shubhang Nagars and Toby Gough competed in the Open Year 11 and 12 section of the competition. Against an extremely competitive field with students who confidently presented resonant topics on social issues, Toby won the competition extolling the virtues of the Power of Music, while Shubhang’s speech discussing the idea of equal payment for equal productivity, was awarded, first highly commended.

Alice and Chaitra will now compete at the finals to be held in Cowra in June.

HICES Debating Round 4

From Ms Justina Holland, Debating & Public Speaking Coordinator

Thursday 19-20 May saw Kinross Wolaroi School debating compete in the fourth round of the HICES competition.

The focus of this round was ‘Government’.  There were four debates contested and three wins for KWS. The Middle KWS 2 from Year 8, had a convincing win against All Saints Belmore arguing against the idea that ‘Teachers should be paid more than politicians’.

The Senior Division KWS 2, Year 9’s continued their winning streak against All Saints Belmore, convincing the adjudicator that the consideration of an Australian Republic was an important issue for Australians. While the Opens KWS 2, Year 11 team, were convincing against Scots All Saints Bathurst, arguing that it was not necessary to alter the voting system to accommodate a separate vote for the indigenous people of Australia. Unfortunately, the Open KWS 2, were narrowly defeated by Blue Mountains Grammar.  They argued in support of a change to the voting system.

The KWS teams continue to impress the adjudicators and the opposition. Last week a teacher from an opposing school sent a congratulatory email commenting on the excellence of our speakers.

Year 9 Agriculture– Orange Show

From Mrs Jodie Haydon, Head of Agriculture

Year 9 Agriculture have been growing vegetables in the school ag plot as part of their vegetable and horticulture production unit of study.  They were so successful in their vegetable growing that their cabbages grew as big as basketballs and their heads of broccoli as large as a dinner plate. So, they entered some of their vegetable in the local Orange Show.

Congratulations to the students for their success at the show.  They took out first prize for their cabbage, broccoli, beetroot and silver beet and second prize for their radishes. They also took out the prize for the most successful vegetable exhibitor.
