Classroom Reports

Foundation & Year 1

This week in Mathematics, children were introduced to the concept of subtraction. We read subtraction number stories and discovered we use subtraction a lot in everyday life.  We use it when we use money to pay for things. At home, your child might like to come up with a subtraction story, e.g. 'I had two pieces of toast and I eat (take-away) one. How many do I have left?'

Years 5 & 6 A/B

The Grade 5 students have approached Naplan with a positive 'can do' attitude and have applied themselves to every aspect of the process. At times, technology was not kind but once again the students demonstrated resilience to achieve a good outcome. Thank you to staff for making this a good experience for the students.

In Term 2, students will learn the different roles involved in Literature Circles whilst reading 'The Wild Robot Escapes.' Our first role is the predicting professor. The majority of students are thoroughly enjoying the sequel to The Wild Robot by Peter Brown.

The Inquiry focus for Term 2 is ‘Energy’ and over the next few weeks the students will be exploring energy and the different forms like kinetic, thermal, and chemical. Last week the students predicted how long it would take for ice cream to melt in different conditions. We all enjoyed an ice-cream as well.

A Taste of Vietnam

In Year 10 English this semester, we have been studying Ahn Do’s ‘The Happiest Refugee’. How better to get a small feel of Vietnamese culture than to do some Vietnamese cooking. Declan found a recipe for Sticky Vietnamese Meatballs with Pickled Vegetables and Vermicelli Noodles. Everyone in the class helped cook the dishes, working really well together and looking as if they were having a good time. It was impressive that the class worked cooperatively and then tucked into their bowls of meatballs and noodles. They all seemed to be very proficient with chopsticks. It was a very enjoyable experience with an excellent outcome. Well done Year 10.

The meatballs, expertly cooked by Junior. These ones were beef. Kyeishia and her group cooked a lovely pork. version of the recipe.

Year 9 & 10 Visual Communication and Design

The Year 9 and 10 Visual Communication and Design students have been looking at Product Design and the Design Process. The students constructed a stool from concrete and wooden legs. They painted the top of the stool, or one student used mosaic as the top of his stool (Junior). The students are then required to photograph the stool and using Adobe Photoshop they will place the stool in context. Beau Hartnell in Year 9 has created a very elegant stool and placed it in a room that complements his idea (see image).

'Celebration of the Arts' Evening 2022

We are delighted to announce that on September 2nd, 2022, Wedderburn College will be hosting a ‘Celebration of the Arts’ evening, as a showcase of students’ skills and passions within all areas of performing arts.

Each student, from Foundation to Year 12, will be performing their class’s act, which will be selected with student input and facilitated by school staff. Students from Years 5 to 12 will also be invited to audition to perform on the evening as individuals or in groups. Google Forms will be provided soon to homeroom teachers for students to sign up to audition. Auditions will take place in Week 1 of Term 3.

We look forward to seeing the many talents that our students have to offer!
