Magis report

Round four of WADL Debating continued via the Zoom platform on Tuesday evening – with some narrow wins and narrow losses across our Novice and Junior Teams. All teams performed admirably, and I congratulate all our debaters on an outstanding effort. Special thanks to Ms Lumley and Sr Tess for their assistance on the night, and to JTC alumni Rory Hewson for expert coaching. With exams in progress our Senior debating teams have postponed their debate till after exams.

Round 5 fixtures can be accessed via Teams. Junior and Senior team debates will continue as impromptu, whilst the Novice teams will be debating on whether to make organ donation compulsory. We are sure to hear some very interesting arguments being made on this topic.

The College’s Ethics Team will be competing in the Senior Secondary Students Australasian division of Ethics Olympiad on Monday. They will be competing against tops schools in Western Australia, Singapore, and India. The Ethics Olympiad is a competitive yet collaborative event in which students analyse and discuss real-life, and timely ethical issues. It differs from a debate in that students are not assigned opposing views; rather, they defend whatever position they believe is right and win by showing that they have thought more carefully, deeply, and perceptively about the cases in question. We wish our College Ethics Team the best of luck for Monday.

Next week the Homeroom Magis Challenge for Term 3 will commence for Years 8 to 10 students – with Years 7, 11 and 12 to compete in Week 7. The topics to be tested will be Humanities, Art, Languages and Literature. Homeroom and House leaders are in the process of gathering 10 representatives from each Homeroom, to compete to win House points.

Fancy yourself a Chess Grandmaster…or are you simply a fan of the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit and would LOVE to learn how to play chess. Well, I am happy to report that College Chess Club has begun. Students will be taking part in a friendly round robin throughout the term. The House Chess Championship has been moved to the end of Term 3 – so that students can brush up on strategies and practice moves in Chess Club in preparation for Magis Championship. Whilst this is a student lead Club, if you would like to find out more details, please contact Mr Connellan.

You can keep up to date with Magis and Altiora events by following the Term 2 calendar – which can be accessed by clicking on the link below.
