2022 HASS Week

Throughout last week the HASS Learning Area conducted a range of fun activities and events to celebrate the Humanities and Social Sciences subjects of Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography and History. Every morning in Homerooms, students were challenged to answer a range of questions from the state flag of New South Wales to the Prime Minister that had the middle name ‘Christmas’. During lunchtimes students participated in ‘Politics timed challenges’, ‘Geoguessr Contests’ and a ‘Famous HaSSians picture quiz’. The week culminated in the annual HASS Week barbeque on Friday 20 May, where students could enjoy a sausage sizzle and drink at lunch time. Thank you must go to all students who actively participated throughout the week and staff for their organisation of these activities and events.

Secondary catch-up photos

Please note the photographer is returning to the College for a final time on Tuesday 31 May in the morning to complete the photos of both Homerooms and individual portrait photos.

The following Homerooms will have a new photo taken in the morning due to high absentees on the original date: 9 Koolyangarra, 7 Loyola and 10 Koolyangarra.

Individual portraits will be taken from 8-8:40am in the Hall and then from 9:45-11am. If Year 11 or 12 students missed their portrait photo and want to have their individual photo taken they can do so before their examination in the morning.

Refugee Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about refugees and celebrate their positive contribution to Australian society. We want to create a welcoming culture and better understanding between different communities to encourage successful integration that enables refugees to live in safety and to continue making a valuable contribution to Australia.

As part of this celebration, we are excited to welcome the Fare Go Food truck back to the College. The Fare Go Food Truck is a social enterprise staffed by refugees and asylum seekers. They will be serving up delicious cultural comfort food, providing an opportunity for students and staff to eat, share and connect while empowering refugees and asylum seekers through employment.

Caring for our campus

As part of a sustainability initiative at the College, Year 7 Homerooms will be rostered on to help collect and correctly dispose of litter that is left around the school grounds. Many thanks to Mr Haines and the Year 7 Loreto for kicking off the initiative last week. They managed to fill five shopping bags with rubbish that had been left around E Block and the basketball courts. This litter was then placed in the appropriate bins to be disposed of correctly.

National Day of Healing and Reconciliation Week

National Day of Healing and National Reconciliation Week offers people across Australia the opportunity to reflect on and express regret for injustices of the past, to focus on reconciliation, to hear about the culture and history of Australia’s Indigenous people, and to explore new and better ways of meeting challenges in our communities. These occasions aim to give people across Australia the opportunity to focus on reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. It is a time to reflect on achievements so far and on what must still be done to achieve reconciliation.

On 26 May, 1997, a report was presented entitled 'Bringing them Home'. This was prepared by the National Enquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.  It included sad and painful stories of the removal of thousands of Indigenous children from their families.  The Report recommended that a Sorry Day should be held.  National Sorry Day has since become the National Day of Healing

The week following National Day of Healing is called Reconciliation Week.  It is framed by two very important dates: 27 May is the anniversary of the 1967 referendum in which 90% of all Australians voted to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Indigenous people and include original inhabitants in the census.  3 June marks the anniversary of the High Court’s Mabo decision, which recognised the Native Title Rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and overturned the myth of 'terra nullius'

We pray

God of justice and forgiveness,

Guide us as we continue on our pathways to reconciliation.

Grant us the courage to speak out against the injustices that our Indigenous brothers and sisters continue to suffer.

Help us to see with new eyes, to listen to the stories of our Indigenous brothers and sisters and to feel with a heart of compassion.

Help us to build right relations with each other based on truth and justice.

We ask this prayer through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

Clubs

Due to the popularity of Dungeons & Dragons we have separated the big Year 7 group into two smaller groups. Both will still play 'The Lost Mine of Phandelver' on Thursday afternoons in B Block from 3:30-5:00pm. Nils Soderstrom (Year 10 Loreto) will be the DM for one group, whilst I will run the other.

Tom Ellis (Year 8 Campion) will continue to run his campaign in the Library on Monday afternoons in one of the conference rooms.

We have started a JTC Chess Club! A meeting was held during the week to ask for expressions of interest in creating a committee. We had a number of students attend and we discussed the structure and rules of the Club. Tom Hudson (Year 10 Loyola) and Max Watt (Year 10 Koolyangarra) have volunteered to be the leaders of the group and to help the younger students gain valuable leadership experience. The Chess Club will be run by students, for students and I will oversee the general progress of the group.

The format of the matches will be round robin style where each pairing will play each other twice in the allotted time frame. The highlight of the Club will be the Magis Interhouse Chess competition that will occur towards to end of Term 3.

The Club will commence in a few weeks, after the Year 11 & Year 12 students have completed their examinations. At this time a meeting will be held to open the Club to all students and take a list of participants in the round robin competition.

The STEM Drone Club has resumed after many disruptions. Any Secondary students interested in flying drones are welcome to attend from 3:20-4:30pm on Wednesday afternoon outside the St. Louis Sport Centre office. No experience is necessary, and we have drones for the students to fly. If you have your own drone, you are welcome to bring it along as well.

Winter NAS

This week our Years 7-10 NAS teams competed against Sacred Heart College. Despite the pressures of sickness and COVID-19 affecting our players, John XXIII College was once again able to field full teams for all games. An enormous thank you to all staff and students, especially those playing away, for representing the College so well.

A reminder that all NAS players must wear a mask while travelling on buses for away games.

Next week all teams have a BYE and will take part in a training session from 3:30-4:15pm. At the conclusion of the session, all players and coaches will be invited to enjoy a well-deserved sausage sizzle.

All NAS results can be accessed via the link below:

 School Sport WA Cross-Country

Last Thursday, our cross country team competed in the School Sport WA Cross-Country Carnival. This competition is the platform for selection into the SSWA Interstate Cross-Country team which competes in the School Sport Australia Cross-Country Championships in Term 3 of the year.

Due to sickness and reasons out of our control, our team were sadly unable to contend for the overall champion school. Despite this fact, all team members ran their hearts out on the day, making us proud. They are looking incredible for the prestigious ACC Cross- Country Carnival coming up on Thursday 2 June.

ACC Cross-Country Team

Congratulations to all students selected to represent John XXIII College at the 2022 ACC Cross-Country Carnival. These students are to be commended for their commitment to our morning cross-country training sessions and their results from both our Interhouse and School Sport WA Cross Country Carnivals.

The team met at Alderbury Reserve on Thursday this week for an early morning training session to familiarise themselves with the ACC Cross-Country course. Our final training session will take place at the College on Tuesday 31 June, it’s very important that all ACC cross-country team members attend the final training session to prepare for the big day.

Students that have made the team are invited to purchase our team cross country singlet from the uniform shop. This is the same singlet that is used for the Interschool Athletics team later in the year.
