YEAR 7 FRENCH AUX CHAMPS ELYSÉES PERFORMANCE

On the last day of Term 2, Monsieur Chamontin organised a performance by some of his Year 7 French students at the main campus.

Here is Ashanti’s take on this experience:

Singing the aux Champs Elysees song was one of my favourite experiences in Term 2. Originally my friends didn't want to come as well as most of the class, but that didn't stop me. I decided to sing! on Friday the 24th of June, at lunchtime, I got my printed out lyrics of the song and took to the stage. At first I felt shy and out of place as everyone seemed to have a friend up there. but as the music started and seeing my friends in the audience all those emotions went away. I sang with all my might as well as seeing everyone there have as much fun as me, singing, dancing, swaying and smiling. I could tell everyone was having a fun time.

LE QUATORZE JUILLET

To celebrate Bastille Day, the French national holiday, the Languages Society at East Campus showed the film Mr Bean’s Holiday during lunch time on the 13 and 14 July. Even if we can’t visit at the moment, we can have fun watching someone else experience the joys of travel in France.

Hi, my name is Alice and I am a language leader at the East Campus in grade nine. I do French as an elective this year, and I plan to continue it right up until grade 12. I have found learning a language to be such an enjoyable experience at McKinnon so far with a great curriculum and amazing opportunities. I am so excited to run some language-based activities and competitions at the new east campus, and I look forward to the year ahead. Thank you!

YEAR 9 LANGUAGES EXPO PREPARATIONS

Our Year 9 German and French classes have been working hard on finishing their preparations for their Languages Expo.

A piece from our year 9 French classes, written as part of their contribution to the Year 9 Languages Expo:

Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa. The population is 20.9 million, the majority of which identify as Mossi, the ethnic group that Burkina Faso is home to. The people of Burkina Faso are called Burkinabe. The area of Burkina Faso is 274,200 sq km, which is slightly larger than the state of Colorado.

The official language is French, but 90% of the population speaks native African languages. The capital city of Burkina Faso is Ouagadougou, located south of the Sahara desert. Burkina Faso was known as Upper Volta until 1960, The name Burkina Faso became official in 1984. Burkina Faso means ‘land of honest men’.

In Burkina Faso, tourism is less popular than in other countries due to the threat of terrorism. Even though there are not many tourists in Burkina Faso because of the danger level, it is an extremely beautiful country with many attractions including the Cathedral of Ouagadougou.
