WELCOME TO PE & SPORT IN SEMESTER 2

Already we are off and running to a great start with some outstanding success at the SSV State Cross Country Championships that took place in the Yarra Valley on Thursday 14 July. We had four teams reaching the podium and the U16 Girls bringing home the State Champions pennant. Congratulations to all of these outstanding athletes (more details to follow in the cross-country report).

More congratulations go to some of our exceptional athletes who have been selected to represent SSV Team Vic at National Championships.

The PE department has a lot planned this semester to keep students happy and active. We have recently surveyed the school community to gain their ideas on what activities they would like to participate in. If you have not yet filled in this survey, please do so soon.

On offer this term will be some Rock Up Volleyball, Badminton and Futsal competitions as well as the Semester 2 Beep Test Challenge and some Year 12 house competitions. Keep an eye on the compass news feed for details on how to get involved with these activities.

Stay active, stay healthy.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

On Monday 18 July, after two years without it, McKinnon staff and students braved one of the coldest and wettest mornings, to come together for the Athletics Carnival.

With House colours as the theme, there was a sea of blue, red, yellow and green inspired outfits.

Despite the weather, the number of participants in most events were higher than they have been in the past. There was much excitement on the track as students competed in hotly contended track and field events, with the closing event of the day being the House Captains Relay.

Results are still being tallied with not much between 1st and 2nd place. The winning house will be announced soon!

STATE CROSS COUNTRY

Last Thursday 14 July, McKinnon's largest State Cross Country team jumped in the mini bus and headed to the Yarra Valley. Given we were scheduled to run on a race track we thought this course would be easy compared to what we dealt with at Cruden Farm, oh how we were wrong!

Face plants into the mud, shoes falling off and having to finish the race in socks, the hill at the back of the race track and the flu were what we had to endure. Despite all these setbacks we came home with our best state results ever!

An historical win for the school and our badminton team!

The Year 8 Girls Badminton team were undefeated!

We enjoyed several badminton matches with Brighton, Bentleigh, Westall and Parkdale Secondary Schools. We'll be going to regionals on Thursday 18 August.

We would like to thank the other schools and players for some exciting and close matches. We would like to thank Christine Yuen (Year 8) for scoring our matches and Mrs Hooper for coaching our team.

We hope our luck will continue throughout the year!
