Principals Message

Dear parents and carers,
This week at Assembly, Yr 5 students Amarlia Wise, Elaina Walsh and Violet King spoke to the students of the story of Dolly Everett, a young girl who took her life in 2018 due to some serious issues with peers bullying her. These students understand the importance of being kind, being an upstander and working as a team to bring about change.
One focus of the girls' presentation was to draw attention to Dolly’s experience and the experience of her family and raise money for the Dolly’s Dream Foundation. Our main focus at school is to encourage our students to be upstanders. We teach children to be able to know the difference between an accident and bullying.
In our discussions with students we highlight the following;
- Always tell an adult at school if something is worrying you
- Tell others to stop what they are doing if it is inappropriate (this can take courage)
At St Xavier’s EVERYONE needs to feel safe, to feel respected, valued and cared for and we all need to be learners. We spend time with students every day helping them sort through their concerns and issues. Children need constant help to regulate their emotions, some more than others. They also need help to see the big picture of a situation. They need help understanding the impact of their words or actions. This is all part of growing up and developing as a person.
If your child confides in you about a problem at school please encourage them to share with us or let us know. We believe in strong teams and the partnership between parents and the school is vital. We appreciate parents who touch base with us, no problem is too small.
Kind regards,
Jen
