Garden Report

The purpose of students learning Gardening at St Cecilia’s is to create an edible garden and foster environmental stewardship. This semester, students have been gardening every fortnight. They have observed seasonal growth and harvest, examined the different stages of the plant cycle, and conducted activities appropriate to the garden needs. Such activities include, leaf collection, seed sowing, planting seedlings, cooking harvests, tasting harvests, weeding, collecting seed, chicken husbandry and identifying nature.

As you may know St Cecilia’s Primary School has an amazing garden and chicken coop! Today I’ll be explaining some rules, animals and even structures that we have brought into this place of peace!

Firstly I would like to introduce the chickens' names! We have four lovely chickens called Afro, SpongeBob, Patrick and Chicken Little. When I said animals I also meant Insects! Insects are disgusting to many but may be cute to some, but no matter what, this was their home first, so we respect them and leave them alone and don’t harm them.

Anyways it’s time for the rules that we have in our garden!

  • Don’t harm chickens or insects
  • No running
  • No yelling
  • (If chicken moniter) You must complete jobs that you have been assigned.
  • Don't leave the chicken coop open.
  • No picking fruit, veggies or plants, only if Anna says so.
  • Be peaceful and have no negativity.
  • Don't go into the garden unsupervised.

In this garden we have many fruits and veggies (delicious ones too) that are homegrown that students pick in garden lessons that are ripe and ready to eat! Not only do we have veggies or fruits we have eggs too from the chickens!

Have you ever wanted to get fresh produce for a low price? Well, come to St Cecilia's Primary School, where there is a lot of fresh yummy produce and only for a low price that is very affordable.

We also have had multiple people at various times coming in and helping with and building structures in the coop or helping  with our garden. They are there to help the plants and if there has been a storm, there will always be our community here to help with mulch or dirt etc. and we are so grateful.

Lastly, we would just like to acknowledge our amazing gardening teacher who has so much care for the garden, and  chickens as well as our students, teachers and parents who help out from time to time.
