Co-curricular - Junior Sport

Every year has an event or period of time that makes it memorable. Sometimes the years are remembered for the incredible, the joy or the extraordinary. Other times, they are remembered for the unprecedented or the sadness they provided. This year will no doubt be remembered for the unbelievable volume of rain we have had.

The rain has certainly put a dampener (no pun intended) on many events, particularly Saturday sporting fixtures. Once again, we have had another round of sport almost completely wiped out due to the rain and its effects. With only two more rounds remaining, we keep our fingers crossed for the sun to shine and a little breeze to help us get back out on the ovals.

The final round for Junior School Winter sport will be held on Saturday 6 August. After this date, there will be no further training for Winter sports. The Junior School will then run headfirst into the Athletics season for a quick, three carnival season.

I would like to highlight the efforts of our youngest Rugby team over the past weekend and the season. Last weekend, the boys of the 10 A Rugby team played the only game of sport for the round. When all other games had been cancelled, the 10 A Rugby side played in what could only be described as horrendous conditions. A sodden field, driving rain and freezing winds could not suppress the enthusiasm of the boys. All the members of the team turned up ready to put their best foot forward. The boys played hard until the final whistle and although defeated on the scoreboard, they walked off the field triumphant knowing they had given their all and played their best. Truly outstanding examples of our school motto Luceat Lux Vestra. Well done boys.

While on the subject of Rugby, over the Semester 1 break, a number of Junior School students were selected to play in representative teams competing in the NSW Junior Rugby Union State Championships. From all reports the boys all contributed well to their teams and came away with a few wins from the tournament.

Congratulations to the boys selected to represent in the following teams:

With all the rain over the past few months, Breen Oval has become very wet. To give the oval an opportunity to dry out, ready for games this weekend, a decision has been made to postpone all Junior Rugby training until this Friday. All boys will complete a contact session at this time in preparation for games this weekend. Boys are to meet in Powell Pavilion before moving to training.

Finally, last week I announced the new records set by boys at the recent Junior School House Athletics Carnival. Apologies to Anthony Mastoris as I printed his High Jump record incorrectly. Last week I noted his new record as a jump of 1.39m. He in fact jumped 1.42m. Surpassing the old mark by 4cm. Well done Anthony on an excellent achievement.

I look forward to seeing you all out supporting our teams this weekend, in our second last round of Winter sport.
