DECODABLE READERS @ CEPS

Context -

With our focus on the ‘The Big Five’ reading skills

of Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency,

Vocabulary and Comprehension, we have been

busy purchasing reading material to support our

Guided Reading sessions with students. The junior

classes have enjoyed reading these decodable

readers that support our Synthetic Phonics Program

and align with our MultiLit Reading Intervention

Program.

Decodable Readers -

Decodable readers allow students the opportunity to read both fiction and non-fiction texts where the words are controlled to focus on specific phonics patterns. This enables multiple opportunities for students to practise looking for targeted graphemes introduced in the classroom and to match these with phonemes in-order to read words that are unfamiliar to them. By reading decodable books, students do not develop a reliance on repetitious and predictable text. They are able to reinforce the knowledge and skills taught in explicit Reading lessons and readily apply this when spelling.

These new decodable books are a terrific resource for our classroom teachers. They are very excited to be using them to support targeted differentiated learning for our students.

HOUSE ATHLETICS

What a fabulous day!  We finally got to complete our Grade 3-6 house athletics.  Our first one in three years!  Weather was glorious, students excited and so much fun to be had!

Students were able to participate in all activities; field and track events. These included shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump, sprints and 800m, as well as some novelty events.

We had wonderful teacher and parent helpers on the day and some fantastic children as well helping at events. The only disappointing thing for the day was… missing the teacher v student race.  I guess the teachers live another day!

Thank you to all involved in the organisation and support on the day. A big shout out to Deb Butler for bringing a bucket load of coffees!!  The district team will be announced shortly and they will participate on Thursday 25th August @ Duncan McKinnon Reserve. Good luck to all attending.

Results on the day:

 1st - Coolac

2nd - Arunyah

3rd - Tarmaroo

4th - Kambara

A fabulous effort from all teams!

DISTRICT BASKETBALL

On Monday 1st August, our District Basketball team had an awesome day competing against other schools in the Cheltenham District at Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough.  8 games in total with 6 minute halves.

They were fast, determined and played like a true sporting team.  Some great defence work in all games made it very exciting to watch.  Some fantastic intercepts and fast breaks often gave us the winning edge.

All the boys in the team tried their best and I am very proud of their efforts on the day. Overall Mentone Grammar won on the day and are now through to Division.

Our results on the day were as follows:

Game 1 V Stella Maris (lost 10-14)

Game 2 V Southmoor (won 14-3)

Game 3 V Heatherton Christian College (won 12-8)

Game 4 V LePage (won 13-2)

Game 5 V Cheltenham (won 10-9)

Game 6 V OLA (lost 4-17)
