Careers & Pathways Update

Anna Langley

Welcome Jenny Muller!

After five years of supporting students in the classroom, we welcome Jenny Muller to the Careers and Pathways Team as our Administration Assistant. Jenny has a natural affinity with students, and we enjoy them popping into the Careers office to see her. She brings efficiency and a great sense of humour to her work, and we’re pleased to have her on board.

Year 9 My Career Insights - Morrisby Program

Year 9 students will do their Morrisby Career Insights profiling on the first day of Term 2, Tuesday 26th April. It is a Department of Education and Training initiative to help students discover, develop and drive their career planning. It is a unique opportunity for them to learn more about their strengths and abilities while exploring potential career options – giving them the confidence to start taking control of their future. The profiling day involves students completing a series of online questionnaires and quizzes. In June, prior to selecting their Year 10 subjects, students will have a scheduled 30-minute interview with a Morrisby-trained Careers Consultant to help them understand their profile and explore their options. We encourage parents/guardians to attend these too.

Year 10 Career Education Activities

This year we have partnered with Box Hill Institute’s Skills and Jobs Centre who delivered Cover Letter and Resume workshops to all Year 10 students. The PowerPoint presentation was shared on Teams, and Fiona and I are available to help students in Period 4 on Wednesdays when they can drop in for support and advice with job applications and interviews, work experience, or any other careers/pathways-related questions. 'Week A' students can see us in G2 which is the classroom opposite our office, and 'Week B' students can find us in room 218 in the Library.

Year 10 students can take their job-seeking skills one step further by opting into our Interview workshops in Periods 5 and 6 on 4th May for 'Week B' students and 25th May for 'Week A' students. These interactive sessions combine theory and practical group activities to help students learn to answer common job interview questions with confidence. Students will also partake in a simulated group interview which is often part of the recruitment process of large retail and hospitality employers who receive high volumes of applications. It is a free, opt-in activity, so if your child would like to participate, please provide consent on Compass.

We are impressed with the Year 10 students who have jumped at the opportunity to do work experience and have already seen us to formalise their arrangements. We look forward to bringing you some of their stories in the Term 2 newsletter.

If you own, manage or work for an organisation or business and could host a student for a five-day placement, we would love to hear from you! Our flexible approach allows students to negotiate a mutually agreed time for their placement so that workplaces have more capacity to host students at their convenience.

Year 12 Retreat and Pathway Planning Conversations

We attended the Year 12 Retreat to outline to students their journey with us throughout the year. Students responded to the Pathways Planning Survey which provides us with the information we need to support them in creating their preferred future pathways. We have begun seeing students individually and encourage those who would like to explore or talk about their options to book in to see us during one of their study periods.

Box Hill High School Careers Website & Student Bookings

We encourage you to explore the range of resources for students and families on the Box Hill High School Careers website: https://www.boxhillhscareers.com/. Students can sign into a secure area using their @boxhillhs email address to access activities, tests and quizzes, and job application tools. The site will be updated, and new content developed throughout the year.
