Library News

Kylie Pearson

We are super excited to be back in the library this term, planning events for this year. We have a truly fabulous reading culture here at Box Hill High School and we love seeing the students back in the space, reading, browsing and recommending new books.

Book Club is back!

Every Tuesday lunchtime the library hosts Book Club. Students are welcomed to bring their lunch and the book/s they are reading and share their ideas and thoughts with other bibliophiles. It is lovely to be back in the physical space, recommending books to each other, selecting new books to add to the collection and creating a positive reading culture. If you would like to join please come along at lunchtime to Room 218.

Children’s Book Council Shadow Judges Project

2022 will be the third year that BHHS students will participate in the Shadow Judges project. The project, where students read and review the top six books that are nominated in the Older Readers Category, is open to students from Year 7 through to 12 and sign-up is with Ms Pearson in the library.

The top six in the Older Readers Category are:

Tiger Daughter by Rebecca Lim; How to Repaint a Life by Steven Herrick; Girls in Boys’ Cars by Felicity Castagna; The Boy from the Mish by Gary Lonesborough; Sugar Town Queens by Malla Nunn and Terciel and Elinor by Garth Nix. https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2022

Please note that books in this category are for mature readers aged 13-18 and some may deal with particularly challenging themes. Students who sign up to read the top six will be expected to write a short review on each and then rank them according to their preference.

Shelftalkers

Another initiative that we are still participating in is Shelftalkers.

This fabulous initiative launched last year by SLAV: School Library Association of Victoria, has been designed to connect Publishers to share advance titles for review by student readers in schools. The hope is that Shelftalkers becomes an exciting engagement tool to facilitate discussion of both established and forthcoming titles and ways to promote reading. https://www.shelftalkers.slav.vic.edu.au/

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Students who are provided with books are expected to:

  • read and submit reviews of no more than 100 words
  • provide a rating out of 5 stars
  • complete both by the date provided by the publisher.

And the best part is that students get to keep the book!

However, all reviews are most welcome so if you love reading and want to promote the most awesome books to other readers, please see M

s Pearson in the library. Did I mention that you will also earn house points? 😊

Knitting Club

Knitting Club is running every Monday and Thursday. We have wool and needles to share so if you would like to come along and learn how to knit, see Ms Pearson or Ying in the library.

Chess Club

Chess Club has had a fabulous start to the year with students streaming into room 218 every Friday lunch to battle it out. With over 30 new chess boards and 10 new chess clocks there is plenty of resources to support both those new to the game and those who need a challenge.

Bread Tags for Wheelchairs

We are still collecting plastic bread tags for the Breadtags for Wheelchairs Project in the library. These pesky items are sent off to be recycled and raise funds to buy wheelchairs for those who cannot afford it. Students can earn House points when they bring in their plastic bread tags so please keep collecting these items. For more information about the project go to https://ozbreadtagsforwheelchairs.org.au/our-story/
