Spectacular 5/6

Grade 5/6

Term 1 Week 2 2021 - Friday 11th of February 2022

Message from the Teacher:

Welcome to 2022 everyone! My name is Nick Duckett and I am excited to join the Le Page teaching team and lead our 5/6’s this year. I have enjoyed working and teaching year 5’s and 6’s previously at the other schools I have been and I love the unique challenges that this age group can throw at you. They are at an age now where they believe they are ready for the big wide world around them and I consider it my role to ensure that they have a guide, along with their parents and guardians, who will help them to begin making that jump.

I have an open door policy when it comes to any concerns that you may have, and I look forward to meeting and working with all the parents in my class to ensure that this year will be one the students don’t forget for all the best reasons!

 Learning intentions:

Week 3 & 4

Reading: Over the next two weeks students will be introduced to the skills they will need to be successful readers, the expectations for reading in Grade 5/6 and they will meet their Book Club group for term 1.

Writing: In writing students will be introduced to the power of ‘strong’ language and how interesting words can be used to take our writing to another level or to convince someone to your point of view. We will also begin exploring persuasive writing techniques and text types.

Mathematics: During week 3 and 4 we will be doing some preliminary grading and testing and then we will begin to explore the value and sequence of different number patterns.

Inquiry: We will be exploring what it means to be Australian, our history and key events that have shaped this nation, including understanding the importance of First Nations culture

What have we been up to?

In week 1 and week 2, we have been establishing our normal classroom routine.  We have been reminding ourselves of the Leader in Me values that help us to be a good leaders and the importance of being the role-models of the school. This has meant understanding how our actions affect others, why responsibility is important and preparing for the leadership roles that are expected of 5/6’s. We have done this through a range of team building games, group activities and classroom discussions where the students outlined what the expectations for the classroom and their behaviour around the school should be and holding one another accountable to these expectations.

Important reminders

  • Grade 5/6 students will need to wear a mask at school
  • All students will need to wear a school hat, bucket or wide brim hat NO CAPS, during recess and lunch
