Junior School Student Leaders

Last week, King’s College’s Junior School Captains, Vice Captains, and Mission & Service Captains were presented with their badges during our Commencement Service. After the filming process, Mr. Rouse prayed for them and encouraged them in their leadership. This week, during our whole-school online assembly, Mr. Rouse presented the Junior School House Captains with their badges.

We are so very blessed to have such a wonderful student leadership group. Already, they have shown leadership in the schoolyard, have assisted me with some administration, and have met with Mr. Rouse and myself to discuss leadership and represent the student body as we made some Junior School decisions.

We pray that as they lean into these leadership roles, they would seek God’s wisdom and encourage each other.

Uniform

As the year progresses, it’s a good time to give a reminder about some of the Junior School uniform details and expectations:

  • Blue shorts are now available for girls. These may be worn in Term 1 and 4.
  • Boys are to wear grey shorts in Term 1 and 4.
  • New shirts, with the college logo, should be worn untucked. The older shirts, with the rounded bottom, must be tucked in.
  • T-bar shoes are not permitted (due to safety reasons).
  • Hats must be worn in the yard.
  • Sneakers are only to be worn on sports days.
  • Hair ribbons, scrunchies, etc. must be in school colours.
  • Long hair must be tied back.

Thank you for your diligence with our uniform policy.

Prep

The Prep students have settled in well to school and have been enjoying learning. They have loved going to all the specialist classes including Chinese, PE, PMP, and Library, and have also loved learning in the classroom. As we learn about the letters and their sounds, the Preps have done some impressive art in our craft activities. They drew amazing astronauts as we learned about the letter ‘a’, and spotty snakes (and beaded snakes) as we learned about the letter ‘s’. They all show great enthusiasm for learning!

Year 1

The Year 1 students have enjoyed making new friends and being creative during quiet activities. This week, a highlight was exploring the schoolyard in search of living and non-living things during our Science lesson. The children are quickly adapting to presenting accurate bookwork to reflect the results of their investigations.

Year 2

Year 2 students have been revising their ‘counting on’ strategies. They have learned that it is much easier to count on from the biggest number. They practiced this skill with a balloon ‘counting on’ game.

Year 3

The Year 3 students have settled into the term well. In Science, students enjoyed identifying common features of animals and how we can classify animals by their differences. In Maths, students have been consolidating their place value skills through activities like Race to 1000. In Christian Studies, they have begun learning about how the prophet Samuel was chosen by the Lord.

Year 4

We have been having a marvelous time in Year 4 learning about the earth and how it belongs to the Lord and what it is made up of. There have been some amazing pieces of writing as our focus has been on creating sentences that have a main and subordinate clause to give the reader a deeper understanding of what the writer is trying to communicate. Here are some examples of students writing:

There they were again flying overhead like a flock of birds. I was only ten years old when the bombs started dropping. My dad was scared but he put on a brave face for me and my family and I wished it would just end…

The smell of pancakes every Saturday morning woke me up as soon as they got on that plate…

Last week we had the best time at the pool and are ready to take on the rest of the school!

Year 5

Congratulations to the Year 5 Classroom award winners! In week 1, the recipients were our new students: Charlie, Michael, and Grace for their courage and perseverance in starting at a new school. In week 2, Phillip received the classroom award for his high achievement on the number and algebra strand of Maths pre-assessment.

The Year 5 students have developed personal learning goals to achieve by the end of Term 1. They have made goals for themselves in Maths, English, and something of their choice. It's already exciting to see them taking ownership over their learning and motivated to achieve their goals. At the end of the term, we'll assess if their goals were achieved or not, and reflect on that while creating new goals for next term.

Devotion

Every morning, our class reads a devotion from the Indescribable Devotion book by Louie Giglio. It talks about some of the amazing things God has created and is a great way to start the day. We also have weekly class jobs where one person is responsible for sharing the devotion and the other person is responsible for asking for prayer points and praying for the class.

Library

Mrs. Neild wanted to know what books we like, so we filled out a form to help her choose more books for the library that we will enjoy.

Humanities

Miss Hazeldine gave our class a fabulous idea to create a jigsaw poster about what life was like in the early 20th century. A jigsaw poster is where people create different posters about different things and then add them all together to create one big poster. My topic was health and I was surprised to learn that because of their unsanitary living conditions, it was common to have rats. This meant that a lot of poor people got the plague. I was impressed that we created this masterpiece together in only 90 minutes.

Year 4 - 6 Swimming Day

I want to thank Jesus for his amazing provision as we could not have asked for better weather for our Year 4 to 6 swimming day last Tuesday. Everyone was really excited to be there, and it was also great to see the staff get in and get wet! The Year 4 students were particularly excited to be vying for a place in the King's College swimming carnival to be held Thursday 24th February. Although some may have been nervous about being in deep water, they didn’t show it. There were lots of smiles, belly-whackers, and some that could dive! We’d love to thank Miss Stephen for organising a great afternoon, we really appreciate what you do.  Everyone is now looking forward to the big day next Thursday!

Junior School LOTE

The Junior School students have been learning some basic greeting words in our Chinese classes. We also learned that the Chinese character for the word 'Blessing' is based on the Bible when in the beginning, Adam and God were in the garden of Eden together. The students also made Lucky Red envelopes with scriptures from the Bible to give to their families.

Year 9 & 10 - Food Around the World

Last week, Year 9 and 10 students in Food Around the World focused on making Pasta. Some students like Dan and Eliana even tried this more advanced rolling method of making a looping rope. Students then finished their cooking by creating an authentic Italian Carbonara dish (without cream).
