Early Learning

Bee Group

The Bee Group children have extended their interest in animals into looking after sick animals. They have been busy treating many sick and injured stuffed animals in our Kinder vet clinic. The children give injections, bandages and medicine, check heartbeats, give oxygen and check their patients with pen lights. They have incorporated literacy by filling out charts as they work, reading symbols and writing ticks and crosses to show which treatment they gave, and recording how their patient felt! Some dogs, cats, fish, and rhinos have been very sad in our vet clinic, but some have been very happy to get so much care and attention.

The Bee children show a great capacity to care for their toys and resources, and also for each other. As they have learned each other's names and begun making connections, it is lovely to hear them offer help and encouragement to each other. Actions such as helping others to join in play are an important part of the Early Learning Framework. This love and care is also an important part of our Christian culture at King's College, where Christ is at the centre, holding all we do together and giving it purpose and reason.

Tuesday Wombat Group

The Tuesday Wombat group have been interested in lots of things at Kinder. We spent a lot of time cooking different recipes in our outside kitchen with sand, bark, stones and lots of water for mixing. We explored pouring sand through a sieve and noticing that the bigger bits stayed behind.

The children have also engaged with the story of The Smallest Turtle by Lynley Dodd. Children acted out the story and created some turtle collages, choosing whether their turtle would live in the sea or on the sand. Experimenting and exploring our world are all part of the investigative learning we do at kinder.

Friday Wombat Group

Our first few weeks in the Friday Wombat Group have been wonderful. The children are settling in well and have been enthusiastic participants in the program. During indoor activities the children have enjoyed creative activities such as painting, pasting, and playdough. They have also engaged in imaginative play experiences, looked at books in the book corner and had the opportunity to complete puzzles.

Each session we have had short times gathered as a group on the mat around morning tea time and also before going home. We have been reading favourite stories and singing favourite songs. We have also introduced a new song (Bee bee bumble bee, can you sing your name for me?) to help the children learn the names of their peers. Outside the children have enjoyed the trikes, swings, climbing equipment and looking for treasure in the sand pit. We look forward to another great week next week!
