Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

The start to the year has been a disjointed one in many ways, and sport has been affected by this as well. It has been great to see our first teams in cricket and volleyball get a game under their belt last Saturday, with a close win in the volleyball and a close loss in the cricket against Iona College. This weekend coming we will have the firsts teams playing, with cricket playing for points and volleyball in trial mode again, both against St Laurence’s College. The AFL 1st XVIII will have an internal trial on Friday afternoon.

All Term 1 sports will begin training from next Monday with games for all teams commencing on the weekend of 11-12 February. Please check the College App for information about training and games.

Rugby Union

We are very excited to be able to launch a new initiative this year in Rugby Union for Years 7-10. As a College we are very fortunate to have had a number of Old Boys go on with their rugby union after school and play at significant levels. We are obviously very proud of this tradition, and what we are even more proud of is that they want to give back to the College. Under the leadership of Mr Pat Howard, a group of Old Boys are providing quality, position specific skills training over five weeks in Term 1. The program is free but all boys must be registered to be able to join.

Dates: 16, 23 February, 2, 9 and 16 March

Location: The Flats

Times: 6:30-7:15am Year 7/8; 7:15-8:00am Year 9/10

Tennis - Mr Andrew Ward, Head Tennis Coach

Term 1 Coaching 2022

Last reminder for registration to tennis coaching for this term to start 7 February.

Group lessons will be conducted starting Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 of February at this stage with maybe another day to come on board. Squad training starts on the 7 February for specific Squads.

A change in one of the names of our squads is as follows: Future 1st IV Squad has changed its name to Future Champion Squad. We have done this so that the name is not misleading in that all students in these squads will make the 1st IV team. Sorry for any misguidance or understanding. The 1st IV team will always, under my guidance, be picked on performance and the best way for the strongest team as a whole.

Sport at Marist

For those new to the College, Marist is a member of the Associated Independent Colleges. We compete against seven other like schools in sport and activities throughout the year. This is the largest part of our sporting commitment but we do also participate in some other competitions as well. You can find out more about each sport through the college website.

Sport is central to the Marist College Ashgrove curriculum not just because boys enjoy them, but because they embody many qualities in which the College believes. Learning to win and lose, to lead and be led, to push oneself to and perhaps beyond one’s limits, to think as part of a team, to know when to strive for more and when to acknowledge defeat; these are all part of learning to be human.

Communication

General sport updates will be through the newsletter each week. This will include summaries from the weekend, student achievements and general information. For sport specific information, such as draws and team lists, download the College app as the staff and co-ordinators post the information for upcoming events using that platform.
