Senior School

Academy Textiles Class
Last week has seen the class complete their first apparel item of a skirt/shorts or a crochet/hand knitted project. Most of the students have not used a sewing machine since they were in Year 7. The class has been astounded by the quality of work they were able to achieve. Students were encouraged to alter commercial patterns so as to customise their garment to meet their personal tastes.
I have been very impressed with their maturity and sense of adventure when tackling this task.
For other members of the class, they have chosen to learn how to crochet or use a circular knitting frame to create a beanie and scarf. They too have had a ball mastering their equipment to create rainbow snakes before tackling their beanies.
Academy Agriculture
On Monday 26 February, Academy Agriculture students were hosted by Tom and Rachel Rummery on their property near Bendemeer. Students are completing a farm case study on their property Yaragool. Tom and Rachel offered the students their wealth of knowledge and explained how they run their business and all that factors that need to be considered when farming. Students had the opportunity to try out some new technology using an ID scanner to identify individual animals and also their individual performance ranking. Tom took the students through their new and improved shearing shed, pointing out some simple yet very effective design aspects that can help improve production levels and profitability.
The students and myself would like to thank Tom and Rachel for their time, extensive knowledge and generosity shown during the tour.
Rotary Youth in Agriculture (RYAG)
Last week three Senior School students from Uralla Central School Jacob, Ned and Tayla attended a RYAG sheep camp at Europambela Sheep Stud near Walcha. Students learnt all about the wool and sheep industry including low stress stock handling, artificial insemination, embryo transfer and many other things that would be helpful when working in the sheep industry. During the week long camp the students visited three properties, Europambela, Nerstane and Ashfield. The camp was co-ordinated and supervised by Rotary Club members from the New England area. The students would like to thank Rotary for the time, work and sponsorship they contributed to RYAG 2018. The students had a great time and enjoyed the experience of learning and meeting other students from the New England area that also have an interest in the sheep industry.
