HOW2Learn

There is little doubt that the classroom of 2018 bears only the most superficial resemblance to any classroom that the parents of our students 'learned' in. There may be some who lament that fact and long for the days of yore where to paraphrase the stereotypical populist politician 'we are back to basics and teaching Reading, Writing and Arithmetic - the 3R's' thereby demonstrating immediately the paucity of their education.

We have spoken often of the changed world into which the students of today will enter and of the overriding moral imperative of schools and teachers to equip their students to survive and thrive in the world of tomorrow not the world of yesterday. To that end the HOW2Learn platform is aimed at equipping teachers to better approach their classrooms and the students in them. It goes without saying that in doing so we are also better equipping our students to learn and connect with their world. As of the beginning of 2018 all teachers in NSW are being accredited in their practice through the NSW Education Standards Authority and their practices are mapped to the seven Australian Professional Standards for Teachers;

1. Know students and how they learn

2. Know the content and how to teach it

3. Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning

4. Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments

5. Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning

6. Engage in professional learning

7. Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community

At Uralla Central School we are keen to utilise practices that build;

CLARITY

 - to make learning intentions and

expectations clear

- to provide clear instruction to grow

students’ expectation of success

- to enable students to be connected

to their learning and their world

- to build learners’ capacity to be

independent.

STICKABILITY

- to organise information in ways that support memory development

- to reduce the brain’s cognitive load

- to support students to develop a

transferrable and enduring

understanding of concepts

- to provide students with strategies to

retrieve information

- to turn positive learning strategies into

learning habits.

University Roadshow

Uralla Central School recently hosted the University Roadshow, where students from Years 10 and Academy participated in an information session about the various aspects of university life. Staff and students from the University of New England, Southern Cross University and Charles Sturt University spoke about their own unique campuses, while also giving presentations on topics such as entry pathways for applying to university as well as finance and accommodation options. Aspects of student life were explored through the use of role plays, with special mention going to Zak Walker, Hayley Hockey and Leyton Hambly for bravely participating in these for the benefit of the audience. After the presentations, students were invited to speak with the representatives, and also had the opportunity to take home information packs.

I would like to give a big thank you to the university representatives who visited our school, as well as to all of the Uralla Central School staff who helped make it a great success. I would also like to acknowledge the excellent behaviour and participation of the students, and hope that they found the Roadshow to be an informative and enjoyable experience. If carers or guardians have any questions about the information provided at the Roadshow, or Careers generally, please contact the Careers Adviser Mrs Nield.
